guys,

have a serious leak problem in my engine. We just rebuild it, everything is normal when put oil and start to load the tappets.. but when the engine start for the first time lots of oli come out from oil filter. and the leak happens just when we star the engine.

I change the filter for other brand, same thing, leak...
I change the oil filter adapter and still leak...
I change the rubber from oil filter for a taller one, for more grip.. still leak
I drain all oil, thake the oil pan out to check if the oil pump valve it´s ok, and it´s fine!
I´m using a new Sealed Power Z2244153 - Sealed Power High Volume Oil Pumps
I don´t no what is going on, should i change the oil pump for a standar volume?
note the pic 6070 the oil filter is crooked a little to left, that happens in the last try.. the pressure was about 20 PSI at gauge. the engine start and at the same tame we have to turn it of because of oil leak.

thx
Giorgio

It looks crooked to me I would remove the adaptor from the block to see if there is something stopping it from sitting flat on the block. Make sure the filter is not hitting the bolts on the adaptor.

I have an old 1966 396 block. there are a couple of different styles of adapters available and neither worked for me. I ended up just sticking with the old canister style filter. makes a mess but you get a new oring seal with every filter and it hold about another quart of oil.

Is your block supposed to use the canister type filter? If so, I think you need one of these adapters. It can be seen in this picture.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...it's happened before. :D

65 to 67 blocks need a canister to spin on adapter, otherwise there is nothing for the o-ring to seat on. You need something like this if it's one of the earlier blocks: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-1024/

x3... check the year of your block. i think these guys are 100% right. my 396 has the same adapter, & it's a non bypass, with zero leaks. the newer one will not work.

Giorgio, what is the casting number on your block?

You can, but you need the original by-pass valve from the canister setup that was probably thrown out. The by-pass valve completes the connection from the block to the adapter. Without it, the oil just flows over the top of the filter instead of through it. It's a long story, but ask me how I know! That's why I gave you a link to the non by-pass type. You should use a quality filter like a Wix or NAPA Gold with a non by-pass filter arrangement. Stay away from Fram.

Hi Giorgio, in order to better answer some of these "technical" questions, you really should put as much info as possible up in the post!

In this particular case, what block you are using, part (casting) number, date, etc.?? Hard to tell from the photo if it's an early or late block?

What is the part number (cast onto the adapter) for the filter in the photo?? I believe that's the "hi-pressure" by-pass-valve, but the one for the later blocks?

The trucks used the cannister later than the cars!!

Assuming it's the early block (and you mention the 283 as well, same setup), below in the photo are all the pieces required to change the filter from the cannister to the spin-on! The (1270) kit on the left, the original adapter for the cannister, and the filter on the right completes the package!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. If you have the early cannister style block, you have the wrong adapter all together?? The one we use here is the Mr.Gasket #1270, which comes with a new "O" ring, and is used in conjunction with the original G.M. by-pass valve from the early blocks, part #5573842. Never a drop of oil anywhere and many of our customers are constantly changing back and forth for "judged" shows where the cannister MUST be installed.

Gary, I'm glad you chimed in. Since his block is a 3955272 does that mean it might be a truck block and would that still have the canister type oil filter?

Giorgio, do you still have numbers stamped on the pad that's on the passenger side front of the block?

Hmmm. Comes up as a 69 block. Could be a truck block like Gary mentioned.
