Afternoon everyone, just purchased a 66, 396 SS 360 HP Chevelle and trying to find out about the correct dates on my engine, heads, intake, exhaust & carb. I have a numbers matching engine but not sure about the heads, intake, exhaust and carb. I have the dates but not sure if they are correct for my engine. Any correct information would be greatly appreciated.

Casting numbers and casting dates would be useful. Also build date of car and type of transmission. Here are basics.
Engine block depending on assy date of engine: 3855961 or 3855962.
Heads: 3872702.
Intake: 3866948.
4160 Holley, auto trans: list 3420, with A.I.R. list 3608
4160 Holley, std trans: list 3419, with A.I.R. list 3609

Heads, block, intake are also cast in Tonowanda, and can have casting dates within days before the assembly date of the engine. A few days or weeks before being more normal.

sorry I didn't get back sooner Two EF "s in my book . 1966 396 with P/G , HPE, 1968 396 HPE
Not sure what book says that but that is wrong. EF is:

  • 1966 Chevelle L34 (396/360hp) with manual trans and no A.I.R. smog, or
  • 1967 Chevelle L34 (396/350hp) with manual trans and no A.I.R. smog, or
  • 1968 Chevelle L34 (396/350hp) with manual trans

Sir, contrary to popular advice, beware of " just google it". too many "cowpies" out there if you don't have the knowledge (aka hip boots ) to wade thru it.

Preferred source:

Or Jeff Helms. ;)
