Les,

on the blocks, there's a casting number cast into the metal on the bellhousing flange on the drivers side. Those block numbers you gave are stamped into a machined surface, usually front passenger side. There's also a cast in date code on blocks, similar to the intake manifold codes you have given. Looks like you have 65-66 stuff, special care must be taken to avoid a bad situation where oil to the lifters, pushrods rockers and valves is cut off.

the 702 heads are regular closed chamber oval port 396 heads. so is the 206 head.

Intake C96 is a date code, march 9, 1966 and k205 = dec 20 1965.

Ok I found the casting numbers on the blocks. 2 of them are 3955272 and the other one is 3969854. Need to know that if they are in fact the older 65-66 version engines and if it would be ok to spend the money on rebuilding one of these, since I already have them or if I should be looking for the more desired 67 and later blocks. Thanks

Because I don't want to Frank. I don't want nor care to become a chevelle expert. I don't plan to live the rest of my life breathing chevelles like you do. I just don't have the time. Once this chevelle is done I may go restore a tractor or something. I've already got a 68 vette and a 40 Ford Coupe in the garage. This is my sons car who is overseas in the Army and was just wanting to surprise him ok? My body shop and I got 9 months to get this done. Don't give me such a hard time. Just don't read my posts. And once this car is done I'll be gone from your life forever ok?

Les, as Tom mentioned the -206 and -702 heads are early big block heads, '65 and '66 respectively, and are closed chamber castings with a combustion chambers in the neighborhood of 98 cc's. Not the best heads as far as flow numbers go, but on a 396 you need the closed chamber heads to build compression without resorting to huge piston domes.

If you're going to use cast iron heads you're really going to want the static compression to be 9.5 or less, definitely less if using anything other than 93 gas, so be sure to select pistons and head gaskets accordingly.
