hey I have a 396 block here that needs decoding.

I know the 3855961 means 65-66 396-427 block 2-or 4-bolt
but what does this mean?

C1171N

Thanks for your help guys.:)

If you're referring to the engine pad, engine IDs aren't coded that way - at least none that I've seen. The code is engine plant (letter), 4-digit number (month & day), then suffix letters (size/hp/trans type). It'd be coded something like T1025EF for Tonawanda, October 25, EF for L34 w/manual trans.

well thanks for all the help. I am getting ready to buy it but would like to have some info first. I didnt see the block in person yet because its 200 miles away, so I can not say where it is located.

I think you are referring to the engine pad date. T0117IN (the T was left out). That would make it a 396 from a CA car beacuse IN means 396 with TH400 and smog. Assembled on Jan. 17, 1966. Could you get the vin# stamped on the pad?

Maybe casting dates, C=march, 11=11th day, 7=1967, and the 1 is the block mold number, and the N is for the night shift...
