Can ou give more info on the car? Things like trans type, rear gear and any other upgrades all impact cam and head choice.

You can do worse than the old original L72-L78 solid lifter cam. It is easy on the valve train, will work with stock valve springs if you keep the rpm down to 5500. It works fine in low speed traffic and has good vacuum for power brakes. Crane makes a good stock replacement cam. Rob Clary, on the yenko.net web site, has run high 11s in a certified stock 427 '69 Camaro. Not too shabby. Some people claim that you have to be always setting the solid lifters. In 250k+ miles of driving these solid lifter cars, I have never found that to be the case. If you have to adjust all the time, either the rocker nuts are backing off or something in the valvetrain is going away. A bonus is a nice exhaust note and a little bit of solid lifter sound which isn't excessive if the lifters are set at .022" I - .024" E.

Sorry, but there's a BB version just like it. Point is, it's a short duration cam, you have a 400 cu in class engine, not a 454 or 496.

What heads do you have? there's a couple gotchas with pistons and heads, post here when you have the heads or know what casting they are.

If you are running a stock geared M22, and a set of 3.31 gears with the 402, you will need a cam with low end torque. The 3.31 and 2.20 first gear of the M22 doesn't match up well together at all. It will be a dog off the line, until you hit the cam's power band. And it will be very hard on your clutch!

I would suggest a Comp cams XE 262, part#11-238-3. I had the XE274 in my 402 and loved it. I also had 373 gears though. I have heard guys complaining of noise with this cam but I had absolutely no problems at all with noise. I switched to a roller now.
