ok. im taking my trans off in the next few days to check it out and to resurface the flywheel and rebuild the third starter.

if any of you have seen my earlier posts, tranny would not shift into any gear but first. anyway, i pulled the pan off this afternoon and saw something that made my stomach churn. metal shards. not alot. none bigger than a grain of sand. but in the bottom of that red atf, it was quite the site.

so my question is, what would cause the tranny to not shift.
then, what would grind to make the metal. the tranny did not make any new noise, it just wouldnt shift.

any input would be great, considering i could really really really use it.

if you need any more info please ask. im happy to say more. and thank you for your help!!!

Resurface the flywheel?...350 tranny problems...?

Okay...you can't get any motion of the car except in L1? If that is the case then what is happening is in L1 the Low-Reverse band is applying. It is the only thing that applies in this case and you have most likely lost the clutches in first gear. If it acts like it won't shift out of first, but you can get it moving in Drive and it revs really high...you have lost the 1-way sprag. It will skip 2nd and go straight to 3rd, but you need to get the RPMs up for it to happen. Either way...you're looking at a complete rebuild. You will also want to make sure that you flush everything including any tranny cooler that you might have. Also, install an inline magnetic filter on the cooler lines. That will help to catch any metal particles that you didn't get flushed.

Sorry to hear about your tranny problems.

wow...its worse than i thought.

thank you for the answer. i guess i will have to get started. how much does a build kit cost for one of these suckers?

im going to start looking, but maybe one of you guys has something. anyway, tranny will be off later tonight and i am having a mechanic look at it to see what he thinks.

i just hope its not that bad....i cant really afford the tranny now lol. i was getting the flywheel done for free, and the starter i was just going to rebuild....so we will see how this goes. :(

I still don't understand the flywheel. You have an automatic transmission. Why do you have a flywheel? Is the flywheel for another vehicle? Yeah...it is probably not going to be a good diagnosis for the tranny. Depending on what all went wrong in your tranny, I hate to break it too you, but you will be looking at several hundred dollars. You should put the word out on the NW section. I haven't had to do any tranny work in many years so I don't have a good estimate. Someone in the NW section might be able to steer you in a good direction. One thing I would say is to steer clear of any chain transmission shop like Ammco, etc. Find a good Mom and Pop store that will do you right.
