Did the 325 hp 327 in the '68 Chevelles have an open element air cleaner or one like the 250 and 275 hp models? Were the valve covers chrome or painted? Any other visual clues that tip off a 325 hp version over a 250 or 275 hp model?
Thanks!

it would have had an open element air cleaner and a holley carb I also believe it only came with a manual transmission 3 or 4 speed. Letter code on the stamp would be EP or ES

Per Chevy By The Numbers, the '67 Chevelle 327, 325 hp used a Holley but in '68 the Chevelle 327 325 hp used a Q jet.

Thanks for the information. Why is the L79 rated 325hp in the Chevelles and rated at 350hp in the Corvette?

Chevrolet claimed that the differences in the exhaust manifolds cost the Chevelle version 25 horsepower.

The real answer is that Chevy didn't want to offer a small block that put out more power than the base engine in the SS396 so instead of offering a base 396 with more than a 325hp rating, the simply rated the L79 down by 25.

FYI: The L79 was rated at 350hp in '65 Chevelles and '66 Chevy IIs. Starting in '67, the L79 in Chevelles got down rated to 325hp.

My neighbor has a '68 L79 convertible, extremely original, like a time capsule. As stated in other replies, open element, chrome lid, chrome valve covers. I've got pictures somewhere if you are interested.
