Any ideas you may have are welcome, I am starting with body work..please help with engine and trans..Currently its got the original 307 engine works fine little trouble but easy fix, I want more power. I am not familiar with this engine and don't know how far I can take it COST IS A FACTOR in this rebuild. so the idea is more power with 307 vs new engine, cost effective?:hurray: Thanks for helping.

I beleive the general thoughts here are, bag the 307 and build a 350. While the 307 will respond with the usual bolt ons, (intake, headers etc.) it will still be slow compared to the same efforts put into a 350.

The compontent will cost the same to build up a 307 or the 350. But, you will get much better performance from building the 350.

Another thought, what rear gear are runnin? A swap to a taller gear like say 3.73 or so will make it feel like it has a new engine if you are currently runnin a 3.08 or 2.76 gear which is pretty much standard with the wagon. Course your gonna pay for it with less gas milage with a taller gear.

But, most of us don't build these things with milage in mind.

all the stuff that goes on a pre 86 350 as far as bolt on will go on a 307. get an intake and a 4 barrel, throw some headers on it and an HEI and run the snot out of it. They respond reasonably well to those few mods. A stock 307 in 70 made 200 hp. lets say 185 if it is worn a bit. The low buck 350 crate is 290. you can get maybe 240 or fifty with those parts on the 307. Then later when you have the bucks for a crate the intake, hei and headers will bolt right up to the pre 86 350. I have a 1970 307 with a 4 barrle and hei in my 78 truck and it is respectible for a beater and it gets decent gas milage.

till its dies !!

then replace it with a 383 that you'll build while your saving money driving around your 307 :D
