What are you 3" guys doing about the crossmember when you get the 3' head pipes in there? I had to smash my x-member a bunch and its still too tight. I think I actually ruined mine.

The next time I get to my garage(hopefully this coming weekend),I'll take pics of my 3.5" exhaust.I had it done by a guy that does exhaust work on the side, and forget exactly how it is underneath.

Hedman headers here too, Mine come back about a foot off the collector and curve into the trans tunnel parallel the drive shaft and curve slightly out to mufflers with dumps.

[][] something like that :) I have a real close fit between crossmember H pipe and ds loop.

I have the Torque Tech 3" system with Hooker Headers and it fit just fine. If I remember correctly, its not even that tight at the crossmember. This is on a 70.

When I had the hedmans and the 3" headpipe, I didn't have a problem.

After I put on the World Products, I found out they gave a "raised exhaust port"?. The head pipes then contacted the crossmember. When the motor would lobe/shake, the pipes would clank! awful.

I used a heat gun (the cetaline torch kind) and heated up the pipe, then took a pair of LARGE pliers and crimped it some. Not the most flow efficient, but I was in college at the time and had a friend at a muffler shop let me come in late one evening.

It still contacts some, so I stuffed a torn piece of exhaust manifold gasket in between them and tied it on with bailing wire. :D My car rocks.

I have the Hedmans also (2" pri, 3" collector). The collectors are staggered (driver collector sits more forward, passenger sits right under the x-member which allows the 3-bolt flange to contact it). I have 2 problems, the flange of the header and the overall largeness of the pipe which allows the head pipes to almost touch the 'member. 1st, I did the torch thing and bend the 'member a bit. Then I took the 'member out and smashed it repeatatley. Its better, but still not enough for my tastes.

I deformed the 'member so much that the fan was hitting the shroud

My 72 has Hooker Comp headers (3.5x2") hooked to a Pypes 3" w/x-pipe system. These collectors are a little lower than others which allows sufficient clearance without any modifications. Installer reversed the x-pipe and the X was located rear of the crossmember.

Odd, sounds like the same headers I was running but the collector was forward of the crossmember, the collector attached to a short peice then went on to the muffler, I used a band clamp on the connection because it was right under the crossmember. I was not running an X pipe by the way.

Brandon, thats perfect (little pricey though).

Before I buy another 'member I'm gonna wait till I get the 5 speed. If I could find a way to drop the tail a little I'll be good. For some reason, when I replaced the motor, I had less clearance - I don't know what I did.

My 3 1/2 fits ok . The Mufs are a little big though.Flow master gave me these at the Street car shoot outs a Memphis in 2000. I just mocked it up and had a buddy weld it up.

Its just to loud on the street now

I have the 3" Pypes system with x and Hedman headers and I had to beat the crossmember almost flat to get anywhere close to enough clearance to bolt up the reducer to the collector. The flange still rubs on the floorpan just a bit, but I think with some more tweaking it will work. That modified crossmember looks like a nice solution...my factory crossmember is now unrecognizable..

I would check out a crossmember from an 68-72 Olds Cutlass/442
They have nice double "humps"
I may look into that.
