Guys,

I'm struggling to find muffs for my Nova.
I want, 18"-22" case 3.5" center in center out straight through muffs with Stainless Steel packing. Seems no one makes one.
Forget the Dynomax with the ceramic packing......it breaks apart and blows out. Been there done that.
Ditto with Edelbrock stuff. The split they use is stupid, and they also use ceramic packing that blows out. Been there done that!
Borla only seems to make short muffs. And for big $$$
Magnaflow makes what I want...sort of, but only offers in offset/center. Drives me nuts. Why not Center/Center?
Dynatech....only short styles.
I do not wish to use chambered mufflers.

Suggestions please?

Am I being too stubborn?

I use an Offset inlet Center outlet muffler. I felt it was the easiest way to make it fit with maximum ground clearance.

you run the mid section tubes along the bottom edge of the trans tunnel on the floor, keep plenty of driveshaft clearance.

I used 16ga stainless and the mid section and H-pipe weighed 14lbs

The mufflers were 14lbs each. 42lbs total system weight

If you were really stubborn you would make your own mufflers!

Why not connect a short and a long Magnaflow race series muffler? They make a center/center 3.5" race muffler in a 6" body and a 14" body. If you do this make one side have the short case first and the other side have the long case first - this will make the exhaust note more "musical".

The 31 Chevy I owned was tubbed with a 454. To get the ex routed the way it needed to go because of the 4 link I cut the end of the case off the flowmasters and made new ends. Worked great now the mufflers were vertical down the length of the car instead of horizontal. Kind of like the factory set up in the camaros. It gave me offset inlet offset outlet.

At 131+ mph I would say he is beyond 700 horsepower at the crankshaft.

It is not clear to me when I look over some of the exhaust sizing requirements how, or if, they are comparing separated duals to crossover or "X" systems. When I last redid my exhaust I went with 3.5" pipes off the collectors, into a 3.5" X crossover, then tapered to 3" pipes off the X and into 3" Magnaflow straight through mufflers, then dumps at the axle.

I have 3.5 inch magnaflos with the Torque Tech 3.5 inch tailpipes and a Dr. Gas X pipe and the Mufflers in the pictures I have I thought were center in and out. They fit perfect under my GS (same frame/flooring as chevelle) I use the Race mufflers and my car has the shorter ones. They sound quiet till the loud pedal is down. Are you looking at that application of MAgnaflo?

Thomas:
We made 701 hp at the flywheel, on what I think is a rather conservative dyno. As long as I don't have the tuneup wrong, I think that's a reasonable estimate......in the car.

Racebuicks...and I love Buicks, maybe I'm trying to make it too quiet. I dunno. Trying to not **** of the neighbors too much, and be able to live with the car to and from the track.
Basically, I'm attempting to build a near zero loss system.....
I have decided that I'm not going to find a long style muffler in 3.5" center to center. My guess is that there is simply no demand for such an animal. Borla probably comes closest with thier 16" units.
I could use a shorter muff from a few diff manufacturers, and either put 2 in series, or simply add a pair of the Dynomax bullets after the muffs and also in the middle of the tailpipes.
The problem with 2 of the shorter fancy muffs is that the price adds up in a hurry.
As far as space to install all of this, I removed the rear footwells and replaced them with flat plate when I built the car. So I don't have those to deal with. I also have a fuel cell instead of the stock tank, so that makes routing back there easier as well.
I'll go back and look at the shorter Magnaflows, as well as the Dynatechs. And then just build the tailpipes with the Dynomax bullets inserted and see how it sounds.

Appreciate all of the input!

HFNY!

Ron, I don't get it - after spending money and time to make it fast and safe a few extra bucks on the exhaust and that puts you out?

You already know that your neighbors would like it quieter.

If the money is it then just go with the 3" mufflers - I am certain they will make no appreciable hp loss as long as you have crossover.

I still dig the idea of tandem short long - long short 3.5" mufflers for a unique exhaust note.

Easy there Thomas......the idea of $400 worth of mufflers just bugs me, that's all.
I have a 3" X on the car now. Maybe I'm spending the time and effort in vain. If I sink $800 into a new bigger exhaust for no gain in performance, it won't be the first time.
I have a plan now, and you can bet I'll post the results here....in about 4 months.

Ron go to the Borla web site and click on clearance then go to XR-1 they have some good discounts. If you don't see anything you like go on e-bay look up company FASTERTHANTHEM they always have pretty good discounts on Borla XR-1. I just got 3.5" round 15" Borla XR-1 part # 40086 for 113.15 each plus 6.99 shipping . Remember a Borla is quieter than same size Dynomax or Magnaflow not that any strong big block with 3.5" muffler is going to be quiet. If you can't find it on e-bay let me know and I can send it to you.

Its all good Ron.

One of the great truths about hot rodders is that we always like the "bigger" option. I probably don't need a Dominator carb, and you probably don't need a 3.5" exhaust system. But until we try it we will never know - and that is what motivates us to throw money down that asphalt hole that seems to follow our cars. Long ago I stopped trying to make any sense out of it - instead I know that I will not be happy until I see if my ideas work or not.

Ron, My son had both the 3" and the 3 1/2" Borla's on his 540 and i couldn't tell the difference in either noise or performance. He put a Burns small muffler with no tail pipes and the car got a lot louder and gained a little power or lost some weight which made the car accelerate a little bit faster, but only a few hundreths. I frankly liked the Borlas better than anything he's had on the car. He hasn't had the car on the street lately, too my knowledge anyways. His new larger Lemons Headers are way nicer than anything he's had on before now and fit way better than the famous brand he had on before and these clear the road much better and have no interference with the oil filter. Another advantage is they go on one tube at a time are much easier to install.

Thanks FrankC, I'll check that out.

Thomas, I have a dominator too........size does matter......at least that's what the girls say. :)

As I said, I'll let you all know what happens at the digs in a few months.

I'll take the eggs to the track to smear on my face when the car runs the same as before.....

Here is what I chose.
Parts came in today.

DR GAS 3.5" X pipe.
Magnaflow 14" case 3.5" in and out center/center mufflers.
I decided that the shorter muff will have to do.
Flowmaster 3.5" universal tailpipe kits. Plenty of bends.
Dynomax 3.5" bullets that I will install in the tailpipes.

As soon as I get the torque converter replaced, I will build the exhaust.

I need to buy a welder.......I'm tired of borrowing them from frineds!
