I have an SS Malibu, 1965. I bought it 8 years ago and it seemed to have most of the original stuff... I got the wheel off the ground and spun it, counting the driveshaft spins and got about 3 1/3. Since it's a 10 bolt, that makes it non-posi, right? and it would be a 3.36 most likely? I found no numbers on the housing or the axle near the housing. It is dirty, though! I might as well change the fluid anyway, so could I drain it and take the cover off to make a positive ID? What am I looking for? Count the teeth? And what fluid to use to replace?

Lots of rookie questions. Thanks-

Hi Rich,
Jack up the car with both rear wheels off of the ground. Spin the passenger side tire. If the driver side tire goes in the same direction, you have a Posi. If the driver side tire goes the opposite direction, you have a non posi. If the driver side tire does nothing, you might have a Posi that has a worn clutch pack in need of rebuilding. When you have the 10 Bolt Cover off, see if there are numbers cast on the center section. The last 3 numbers for a 3 Series Posi Carrier are 116. The last 3 numbers for a 2 Series Posi Carrier are 118.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks, guys...

37/12= 3.08

So I have an open 3.08 gear! What a powerhouse. l:)l:)

Was that a standard gear offering in 1965?

Well, it was actually a decent gear for mileage......

I changed my '65 10 bolt to a 3.55 with a T350 and mid-modified 350 and ran 14.3 in the quarter.

(With the 3.08, PG & 283, I once managed to get it up to about 95 MPH before it pooped out... actually it pooped out long before 95... but I had a good tail wind.)

That's right, Mike. I do get decent mileage with that gear. It just is different than I thought it was all this this time... I'm glad I checked! You never know what you have until you actually look. Well, I changed the gear oil, at least... Who knows how old that stuff was.

Actually I'll probably drop another cam in it and swap it back in a couple of years! Maybe with the 305 heads.....;) (that motor kicks a$$...):D

... or put the 283 crank in the 327 and have very little torque and gobs of horsepower. It would be a 301. High reving whining machine - fun to drive BUT..... I personally think the Chevelle is too heavy for that engine. Works great in a '64 Nova or something light. I built one for my Nova when I lived in Tucson and worked at Eastside Engine down there.

If ya did that you would have to change that 3.01 gear to something with a bit more dig in it.

Well then, the mighty powerhouse 'super sport' came with a 283, 2 barrel, 'glide and 3.08's! l:)l:)l:)

No, that's cool-- I love driving the thing.
Thats the way my first 65 SS came. I thought I had 3.55`s but once I pulled the cover and counted the gears it was pretty clear what I had. Ran 13.0`s with a peg leg 3.08 and slickes with the 327 I built for it. I miss that car and should have kept it stock and found another body to drag race with.

No! You guys, don't confuse me! Stroking this motor, DE-stroking that motor! LOL... I have the 283 totally done and am just waiting for a break at work to make the swap in a couple of weeks... Once I get the 'butt dyno' feel (probably close to the feel of a 1985 Honda Accord with an automatic...) with the 283, I'll know more about what I want behind the engine. Jake had a 200-4R that I was about to pull the trigger on, but with the gear I have, I'm thinking now more like the 700r4... Have to get the motor in 1st...

Now--- When I get sick of the 283, l:) , I'll want a ton of ideas about what to do with the 327 again! It's .060 over with double humps and NOT original to the car, so that'll be a fun project!
