I just don't get the trendy new NFT thing. But I don't really need fancy new investments, or want to be trendy.

Nft, it's a one of a kind thing. So let's say someone creates a digital image and attached to that image is a song someone wrote. You bought that image and that digital piece. No matter how many times the image is recreated there can only be that one original nft.

I paid 24 bucks on Ebay for my original 1970-71 Sportsman's Paradise Louisiana plate that the Baton Rouge DMV Special Plate office allowed me to revive and use. This is also a "1 of 1" plate and I don't need an NFT to tell me or anybody else about it's rarity and yet reasonable price. An enormous side benefit is that I don't need a state vehicle inspection.

It almost sounds like someody is artificially creating "value" (very doubtful to me in this "MM" case) with these NFT things that appeals only to people that have over-the-top way too much time and money on their hands.
