I am planning my 2004R rebuild but have a question about the tools required. I have the "bible" by Chris Kokkonis for reference. In it Chris says that a lo reverse clutch housing remover/installer is required and that "There is no substitute for this tool and failure to use it will result in damage to the case and the lo reverse clutch housing"

However elsewhere in this forum I have seen somebody make reference to using a piece of wire bent into an L shape to remove the lo/reverse clutch

Not having yet seen one of these transmissions in pieces I can't quite get my head around how a piece of wire will work.

Does anybody have any pointers or alternative methods of doing this.

I have seen the tool for sale for abour $80 but it seems a bit of a waste for just 1 rebuild. (Although if i screw it up maybe it will be a worthwhile investment :) )

2 pieces of wire bent to an L work but it's a PITA, the tool is the way to go. Sometimes if you are lucky you can find them on Ebay for 20-30 $
