Guys,I bought this one 18 months ago.
The original owner tracks me down and wants his car back.I really like it as I paid a premium for it,it's damn nice and put some time and money making it road worthy.
If I ordered it way back in 71 and had the means to get it back I would pray that the guy would be nice enough to send it back.So I'm on the fence here.

Baltimore car
All original-19,000 documented miles,I have all paperwork.pop,good build sheet,window sticker,sales junk etc.
Everything is matching all original except engine, which he purports to have and won't let go of.
I redid the 2 bolt 454 that came with it and it's now really nice and right.
Heck,I took the spiral shocks and stock brake pads off and put new.
New front end.
correct m22 ,12 bolt both leaky but solid.
That being said,wiw?

Just curious how the topic of him not letting the motor go came up?

Come up with a figure that includes what you paid plus labor and parts you put into it. Then consider the time and cost it will take to find another one you like (could be the biggest expense of all of these).

All original is a pretty loosely thrown around term especially since I see some non-original items in the photos. But if its as nice as it looks in the pics, $22-$28k seems fair.

If it were me I would tell him "you already had your turn, so you might as well sell me the OE motor" cause I'm not sellin the car at any price.
But since he obviously knows what you paid for the car and has been un-friendly on the motor issue 30-2K would be my price. He has already sold the car once and probably plans to again once the OE engine is rebuilt/reinstalled but for a lot more dollars. It would be good if you both can find some common ground and get the car and the original power plant together again.

I'd say you're the best judge on value, since you just purchase it and know the car. If that were me, I'd search for another car, a numbers matching car of your fancy and just have him purchase the car for you, trade and it's done.

I would have the same stance on the car as he has on the motor. The engine is most valuable to you, no sense reasoning with the unreasonable.
x2

How much do you have in the car?

I would tell him that he would have to make it worth your while to get rid of it.

unless you need to sell...
tell him you are not willing to sell currently and will give him a chance to buy it back in the future if you decide to sell...

I would not take less than 25K. If everything was correct even minus the motor I would say more like 30K. Just my .02.

I like that. "The car isn't for sale, but I'd trade it for THIS" and hand over a copy of the ad for the car you want. If he says no, I'd go do burnouts in front of his house every day just to be irritating.

Thanks for the interesting replies.
Says he yanked the original and dropped in a 454 460 ls7 crate motor and raced it back in the day.Sold it in the early 80's
Life happened like always and had to sell it to raise his kids.
It sat for a long time w the second guy.He pulled the ls7 and had someone drop in a rebuilt engine it has now and sold it.
I put 150 miles on it then, tic tic tic all the bearings were shot.
I paid 27 for it and probably put another 5 in it,so a couple of you guys are close on the value.
He's going to have to dig deep...

:hurray:I went through this in '07 when I found my original 67 SS. The man who had it wouldn't sell it to me, but would trade for a rust free numbers matching SS. I was able to find one in NY, paid to have it shipped to Grand Forks ND and the trade was made. Bad part was, mine still needed a complete restoration. Yes I bled real blood over this, but I now have my car back. If I was willing to do this, perhaps he will too. Good luck, test the water and see just how serious he is to get his car back.:beers:

If you are willing to part with the car Jerry and John proposed a reasonable solution. If you aren't interested in letting it go Vince's suggestion is fair.

How many people here have had circumstances change, life's responsibilities has a way of changing ones priorities. Treat him as you would like to be treated if you were in the same position.

I am with everyone else. If you look and find something you want tell him to buy it and you'll trade or otherwise I wouldn't take less than 35k after what you have in it.

I think the fact he was prick about the original motor when you bought it changes the level of benevolence. He must have thought this day may come in the future. Now you have the car and his position is diminished.

A lot of good ideas already but in the end you should have a stack of Ben Franklins that represent all of your time and investment or another car that satisfies you as much as this one. as the old saying goes.................The car is not for sale but it can be bought.
