Well I think I wrote a post similiar to this however I have contacted all the owners of my car and tracked the car from day one to the present day which took me about 7 years. I am glad to state that car with proof never had stripes? Is this rare on a 1972 Chevelle SS with a 402BB???

Also my Chevelle SS has the non functional Cowl Induction Hood and I am trying to see a picture of what the original air cleaner on that car came with? I am not sure if I have the proper one since the second owner scraped it for a open air element!!! (look at the pictures) ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED!! http://www.aaca.org/wraaca/anthony.html

Finally My Chevelle SS never had chrome pipes at the end of the tips instead the dual exhaust ended at the bumper and curved down, was this also very common or uncommon???

More stuff is revealed and I have some pictures I will be posting on my web site shortly.

Anthony,

If an SS Chevelle was not ordered with RPO ZL2 (Cowl Induction) then it would not have stripes. I have seen as many SS Chevelles without stripes as I have with stripes, due to the fact that not all SS Chevelles came with Cowl Induction.

From what I can see in your picture, the air cleaner looks correct.

Anthony, Nice car. Tim correctly answered your stripe question, but as far as the air cleaner is concerned, I believe you have an incorrect one. Yours is from a later model Chevy. I am not sure about the chrome exhaust tips, maybe someone else will reply. Here is a pic of a correct one:

Mike posted the correct air cleaner. The one currently with your car has a broader snorkel designed to work with a flexible cold air duct that GM started using in 1975.

As for the turndown tips as opposed to the rectangular chrome tips, the chrome rectangular tips only came on the SS454 in '72; all the rest used a single downturned tip (dual downturned tips on the 402). I remember a nice white '72 Chevelle SS new near Hamilton, Ontario. It had a 402 & 4-speed, the standard domed hood (non cowl induction), hood pins, no stripes, plus the dual downturned tailpipes. I saw it later on for sale around 1977 (I may even still have the old Autotrader ad somewhere...) I should have bought it then but I was on a 10-speed bicycle budget at the time.

Some say that cowl induction in 71/72 was only offered with a 454, and factory literature tends to support that. It may have been possible to also order it with a 402 from the factory.
