so one of my roomates has a 72 chevelle 4 speed with a 12 bolt. well its a long story but basically when we tried to rescue it from his parents house in hamilton we neglected to check the lube in the reared... who woulda known? it locked up on the highway and shredded his pinion gear, carrier is messed up bad axles look like they have been milled by way of a super hot bearing.

he has gotten the itch to start working on it but without it able to drive its tough to do a whole lot that keeps him motivated cause he cant really enjoy the car. his girlfriend is awesome and wants to get him some parts for his birthday to get it going. basically any rearend parts/ rearend if someone has a 10 bolt to drop in, great or a 12 bolt (posi?) carrier, gears, axles anything. its a cool ass car but its only so cool when it cant even drive. she has money and she is trying to figure out what its going to cost to get the velle back on the road but anything would be awesome!!!

About the only thing I can offer is the open carrier and 273 gears in my '70, I still need to change them out but have all the stuff to do the job here. She can have them for free if he would want highway gears and an open dif?

ok so bug thanks to nw lurker for hooking mike up. he drove around for about 10 minutes on his own, came home and i brought the nova out so he just looked at me and said "where to?" so we convoyed for another half hour as the nova ran like crap (sounded fluttery at low rpms, then got it together, think fouled plugs to blame???)

i have never seen the kid with that big of smile on his face! we ran it out of gas trying to get it to tune in the driveway to no avail. is there a reason the mixture screws would have no effect on it?

If they are plugged up it would not make any difference in adjustment. Take the screw out and blow through the mixture hole with compressed air and see if any crap shoots out. A vacuum leak would act like that too.

Hows the shifter working?

Vacuum leak base of carb, center ports of intake, throttle shaft
Junk in the idle screws...good places to look.
If this is ok, consider this....

If he has a "CAM" in there and his initial timing is low, even set at 12 degs.....the primary throttle blades will not be in the right position on the idle transfer slot.

With the engine off, look inside the carb. Open the primaries. In the front of the bores is the transfer slot....a vertical line about 1/4" tall and the thickness of a fingernail. Once you have identified this, let the primaries close. Ideally, the front edge of your primary blade should be centered on the blade.

If in order, move on. If the blade is not centered...do this:

Start the engine
Advance the timing and turn the idle speed down, check the position of the blades on that slot. Keep adjusting the timing and idle speed til things are in the right position, blade centered on the slot.
Adjust idle mixture.
Check the timing to see where it is at (vacuum unplugged), make a mental note.
Rev engine to 3000, see if total timing is 36 degs. Somewhere between 34 and 38 degs total timing each engine has a sweet spot..... Most distributors need a curve kit and their mechanical advance limited.... Performance cams like 16 or 18 degs initial and usually this, plus the mechanical in the distributor, makes too much total adv.

I will tell you there is a HUGE power difference in the RatVette 12 initial and 18 degs....

OK, stock stuff so think simple fixes
add fuel!!!
replace fuel filter
check for vacuum leaks as everyone said
set DWELL if not HEI
Set timing
GET A VACUUM GAUGE.....less than 17 " vacuum for a stocker and you have a vacuum leak.

Sounds like a new carb gasket should fix you right up.

Also- make sure that the rear port plug from your edelbrock carb is capped- if that leaks, you'll always have a bad vacuum leak.
