I haven't seen more than a couple of these for sale. Any thoughts on price range for a rust free project with original drivetrain?
Did you get in touch with the owner? I called and it was the phone number for a fitness center. She said she had been getting lots of calls but didn't own an El Camino. I figured it was a prank.

It would all depend on condition and paperwork if the car was theoretically real. Theres a double entendre for you, theoretically real!

I would think a W code 72 Elky would fetch a pretty good piece of change. Especially a 4 gear car. Say $1500-$30,000. About as narrow a spread as I would offer!

OK, thanks. Perhaps I should ask the question a different way. What is the restored value?
Maybe you should be asking "What is the ACTUAL value?" and "What is the restored COST?" Then, "What is the net profit?"

It all depends on initial condition and final condition.

Restoration cost will be more fixed whether the car is a Elcamino or a Chevelle, however Elcamino actual values will be lower. Folks just do not spend $$$ on an Elcamino like they will on a Chevelle.

True...well, I have owned enough of these cars that I feel pretty comfortable coming up with a cost for restoration, which is why I asked for a retail price once restored.

I have never owned an El...but it sounds like it would have to be bought pretty cheaply to break even on resto costs (maybe excluding a '70 LS6).

For the top of the food chain go to eBay and do a search for a 1970 LS6 Elcamino (highest price first). It's as good as they get with respect to quality and completeness and was 135K last August of last year year. No one has stepped up yet. Also, there a '69 L78 on this site forsale. Last time I looked, no one has stepped up yet.

Just wanted to close the loop on this one. I ended up tracking down the owner and buying the El Camino. Not quite as nice as described (not a fan of the sunroof or wheel flares) but it's a pretty clean project.

Thanks for the advice on value.

The car is Midnight Bronze (code 68) with a black top and black bench. I don't think you could order black paint in 1972, for whatever reason.

I'd rather not say what I paid, but both the seller and I were happy with the deal.

I have a friend with a black 72 SS that his grandfather bought brand new. I think black could be ordered, but wasn't on the list of Colors that year. I asked about this s few years ago and got an explanation on here but I forget the particulars.

Gotcha - maybe it was considered 'special paint' that year.
Yes, black was special order paint in 72. My Dad has a 72 trip black U code Monte and the little piece of build sheet I found even said Special order paint right on it.
