Havent been on here for a little while now so i apologise if i have already asked this question. I've now saved up enough dough to start buying goodies for my rebuild, i want to buy/order the bits before i strip the engine down. I am gonna buy a Voodoo cam - but what followers do i need ??? hydraulic or solid flats (Voodoo do a complete kit for both)

i think the CR is about 8:1 so i want to go up to 9+ using Hyper Kieth Black pistons with my performer heads i bought and an airgap inlet using my S/B carter carb.

Obviously i'll know what followers i have when i strip it down but i wanted to save a bit of time and order the bits prior to getting dirty.

As usual all your comments will be much appreciated.

You can't buy a cam and then choose which lifters(followers) to run. Camshafts are made specifically to be used with hydraulic flat-tappet lifters or solid flat-tappet lifters.

Unless *you know* that you want solid lifters, you probably want hydraulic.

Thanks Dave/Harvey - Dave i know Camshafts are made specifically to be used with hydraulic flat-tappet lifters or solid flat-tappet lifters. My issue is i want to order the same type for my presumably standard 350ss prior to stripping it down which wont be for a few weeks yet, none of my paperwork or manuals tell me so i thought someone on here would know how they came out of the factory in 72 ?

Harvey, i want my car for fast street not strip, btw what have you done to your 355 ? want to keep a bit of economy/mpg as we're now paying about $12 per gallon over here now :(:( soon as i win the lottery i'm coming to the states.

Sorry, I misunderstood the original question. I'm 99% certain that there were no factory solid-lifter small blocks in '72. Not in a Chevelle. *Maybe* in an LT-1 Corvette.

If you believe the engine is original, your best best would be to find the engine code on the pad on the passenger side of the block. Post it up here and someone can tell you for sure whether it was solid or hydrualic. But, I'd wager money its hydraulic.

well i pulled the engine on Saturday and started stripping down, quite a bit of "piston slap" and a noticeable ridge around the top of the bore, lots of carbon build up and dry burnt on oil inside engine :( defo needed a rebuild.

engine number is 3970014 - im guessing its a 2bolt main

can anyone give me some more info on the engine ? is the inlet a for a spreadbore or squarebore carb for instance

heres a few pics i hope

Intake is a low rise dual plane for a barrel carb...the two small holes and two large holes make it a "spreadbore". The pistons are dished & notched, lending themselves to the low, low compression ratio of the stock '72 engines.

Do consult with a machine shop before purchasing any parts, you don't want to purchase the wrong items and have to return them and delay your build. Good luck with your project engine.

Cheers lads, i just noticed in the Vizard book that i think these are 76cc heads and coupled with the dished n notched pistons i'm producing a majestic 7:1 cr. WTF !!!!

well i've got 70cc performer heads to put on and intend to replace pistons with flat tops, so that should bring up the cr a bit, got to work out which voodoo cam now, any suggestions ??? ps i'm getting an airgap intake but keeping the carter s/b carb (for now)

This year we put a Lunati 219/227 roller cam in my friend's 350 with Edelbrock E-Tec 170 heads, Air Gap intake, and Holley 670 Street Avenger. The car only has 3.08 gears, but he's already run a 13.8 @ 101mph with it and it drives around almost like a stocker.
