I have read that the 1970 SS came standard with the resonators in the tail pipes just before the chrome exhaust tips. I purchased my exhaust from Gardner Exhaust and the tail pipes did have the resonators in the tail pipes.

I was at the Atlantic City show this weekend and someone with a nicely restored 70 insisted that only Calif cars came with resonators. Not wanting to argue I just acted surprised. Of course this now has me wondering - is he correct?

Thks

I don't believe he is correct. All 1970-72 SS Chevelles got the resonators with the tailpipes.
It originally was part of the 1969 Chambered Exhaust system. When the Chambered Exhaust got cancelled as Standard equipment in 1969,the resonators continued on.
Resonators should be welded to the tailpipe. But the Exhaust tips should be clamped on,not welded.
Gardner sells with and without Resonators. You have a choice. Some like the with and some don't.

My 70 396 which was ordered new in 1969 came with the resonators. It was an automatic.

Interesting that the GTO's, at least in 69, had resonators on the automatic cars but none on the manual cars during part of the year.

Rich - Was the car in Atalntic City a '70 SS454 - light green with buckets?
I saw this car locally before it went to AC, it was beautiful. For $30k it should be!

Desmo,

Yes, that was it. Very nice car, the asking price was 33,500.00. A little on the high side but very nicely done. The paint job was excellent, one of the nicest I have seen in urethane, very smooth and flat.

The purpose of the resonator -basicly a baby glasspack- was to control the cackle at WOT. Then, as today, most car buyers want somehtign that feels and sounds like gliding on a cloud, we happen to the the bad apples that want zoomie pipes and calaiopie intakes

The documentation I have says that the resonators were factory on all of the SS cars so as to avoid them being overly loud.

I have always thought the resonators do not come on the 396/350hp but DID come on the 396/375hp and the 454/450hp. Am I wrong?

My 70 SS396/350hp did not have resonators
when I bought it in 1973. Have always thought it had the factory exhaust system still on it when I got it. Now I'm wondering if it had been replaced before I got the car.

Well the info I have only covers the 375/450 cars. Perhaps someone else can dig it up.

In about 1971, a friend of mine cut the resonators off his '70 SS 350 hp and gave them to me. They had the factory tips with them. After them laying around a few years I threw them away. Doh! They did come on '70 Chevelle SS 402-350 hp.
