I have an original unrestored all matching numbers ( except carburetor ) 1970 SS Chevelle 454-4speed, no rust, 29,000 orig miles Oshawa built car, with full docs including protecto-plate, under the seat build sheet, original GM microfilm, GM Canada docs etc.....This is an original non cowl, non stripe fathom blue car ( 75% orig paint ) only one of 57 built at Oshawa. I may enter the car as a survivor, except somewhere in it,s past a holley carb was installed and the original Rochester went missing. The car was built Jan. 26 1970. I have 2 carbs , both 7040205 carbs, one has a date code of 3409, and the other has a date code of 0070. Either carb could be used, but which one would be more correct, my guess is the Dec/69 carb, but 7th day of Jan/1970 could work as well since the car was built 19 days later, allowing for shipping from Rochester to Oshawa assembly. As a unique note, the door glass in this car is DCL glass ( Canadian glass ) with a date code of AA70 ( first week-first month-1970 )...When I see this, it looks like the 0070 carb is not far fetched...What does the forum think?

Thanks for the request, I,m not sure how to post pictures, I know how to email pictures to friends, business contacts etc., how do you do it on the Chevelle site?....The car is beautiful, I wouldn,t mind to share it, How?
I,ve been in the hobby for many years ( 53 years old ) mostly Ford Cobra-Jets and Pontiac GTO,s ( have 2 rare ones ), this car was the same as a barn find, except it was a sort of an estate sale, the owner died 4 years ago, and the wife finally put it up for sale, I didn,t steal the car ( she was smart enough to have it appraised )but suffice to say, I was the first and last to see the car. ( she had 11 calls by the time I saw the car, no one else had a chance, I decoded it including jacking it up in the attached garage in January with the garage doors open for extra light, to verify the M22 rockcrusher ( it,s never even had a clutch put in it, and the vin is on it ) and the .331 posi...Car was oil sprayed and looks like it was never winter driven, the underside of the floor pans still have their black paint!...Best part was that even though it was appraised, the appraiser never even wiped the block deck pad to verify the vin stamped on the block, it matched and he underappraised it...It still happens, have to be in the right place at the right time...Bob K

Thanks, the engine codes are T0119CRT so I take it Tonawanda engine built the 19th day of Jan/1970 as an LS5 454, and the last 8 smaller numbers match the vin# of the car, which I already knew....Since Rochester carb company was in New York State, the Jan. 7th/1970 carb I think is more appropriate to use than an early Dec./69 carb...To me it makes sense: carb built on the 7th of Jan/70, shipped to Tonawanda for engine built on the 19th of Jan/70, engine shipped to Oshawa Ont. ( approx 100 miles ) and the car built on Jan 26th/70....I think the Jan 7th/70 carb is the one to use, any other comments ,or opinions out there about this, I would appreciate it...Thanks Bob Krug

Bob,
Either carb you have would work. Carburetors, alternators and starters were installed at the car's assembly plant, not at Tonawanda, which gives you a little more of a window to work with. Also, if you are determing your cars build date by the buildsheet, buildsheets give you a scheduled build date, not necessarily the exact build date of the car. I've seen cars where the buildsheet scheduled date and the cars cowl tag were from different weeks. Your cars distributor and exhaust manifolds were installed at Tonawanda so they must predate the engine assembly date, the other bolt on accessories do not. They just need to predate the cars build.

Thanks again, I have the original GM Oshawa microfilm from the assembly plant showing the car build date of the 26th, it shows the different Chevelles and their codes as they were coming down the line...It,s something that they don,t do anymore ( GM historical archives-Oshawa) but the previous owner had obtained this in 1990 when they would send this along with the build sheet...He also had the actual build sheet from under the seat, the Canadian built cars just had a little 2"x 8" strip of paper with the build codes and options just in lines, one item after another...I own 2 American built GTO,s with their original 8x11 boxed sheets...I guess as Canadians we didn,t want to waste paper back then....I have more history and documentation on this car, than most collectors wish they could get...One of only 57 built at Oshawa with an M22, it,s a pretty rare car...Just as a sidenote I have a friend in Peterborough that owns a 1970 GTO Judge that was Oshawa built, when he shows the car at US shows, people tell him they only made the standard GTO at Oshawa, no Judges, then he pulls out the docs, and their jaws drop....
GM Canada built some wild stuff....Thanks again for your info....Bob Krug
