I have noted on a 70 SS build sheet an option code

ZL3 SS 396 Conversion

On others I have noted

ZL25 Super Sport Option

I also note for the 454 option there was Z15.

What is the difference of ZL3 and Z25 ?

Thks

Rich

I too have noticed this on my buildsheets as well. And ZL3 conversion only appears on 396 cars, not 454.
All 396 L34 or L78 SS Chevelles got this code regardless of where it was built at.
It is my understanding that the ZL3 code was telling the line worker this was an upgrade from a base Malibu. Thus the RPO Z25 396.
But the reason the Z15 LS5 or LS6 454 cars do not show ZL3 conv.on their buildsheet is because in theory you had to order the RPO Z25 upgrade first, then upgrade to the RPO Z15 454 option. Thus making ZL3 redundant.

Rich, I still haven't made it to the Hazlet show . Just curious was your ss made in Baltimore and did you ever find the built sheet. My ss was made in Baltimore and there was two built sheets. My e-mail is [email protected] maybe you could e-mail because I can't find your e-mail right now. THANKS

I've seen ZL3 on our '69 L78 Chevelle's documentation as well on a friends '69 L78 Chevy II's paperwork. It also seems to show up on '69 L34 Chevelles. The only thing that I can see in common with these three cars is the open element breather....Unless I've missed something. I don't think it shows up on 396-325hp cars with closed breathers. Could be wrong though.
Our '69 was built in late January or early February which would eliminate the 402 idea.

I always had a feeling it was only on 402 engine cars that were advertised and badged as 396's
but if that theory is true it would only be on Late 69's

Here's more food for thought....on the last LS6 I restored, the car had written on the firewall under the black paint....ZL3-CRR
(also 28 and GY too) but it wasn't on the buildsheet, just Z15.

(this is the car I had at SCS Indy last year-Von and Tom Lassiter seen it there)
