Do I have to remove the package tray to replace the sail panels in my 70 SS? I got my seats out and the sail panels have been bugging me for a few years now. Good time to replace them. I have roll cage bars going down thru the package tray next to the speakers and really dont want to mess with it.
Replacing the sails a big hassle job??

You don't need to remove the package tray to replace the sail panels, but you need to remove the sail panels to replace the package tray.

You need to pull down the rubber trim from the quarter window area (called windlace maybe?) and also from the rear window. This trim pinches the material of the sail panels onto the underlying metal that it's glued to.

Install the new panels in the same manner with trim adhesive and hold them in place with binder clips. When the glue sets up you can re-install the rubber trim which will hold everything in place.

Don't forget the 70 muffs have a clip much like the door panel clips that slip into a hole (in the doors) as well as in the rear roof metal support that the muffs cover. Check your rear roof support piller and you'll see the hole. This clip (or male metal insert) holds the center of the muffs against the rear roof piller. Mine were recovered without this insert. I had some leftover door panel inserts so I used contact cement and cemented them to the muffs and then contact cemented a piece of heavy plastic over the base to make sure it stays there. So far so good.

I have never seen the clip used on a 70 before. I have on 68 and possibly 69, but not on a 70-72.

I saw a post on here somewhere that showed a pic of the post and the hole in the rear piller that it went into. Thats how I found mine. It's there..

I recently replaced the original sail panels on my 69. When I removed them there weren't any clips holding them on but with the replacements I added the clips. Just makes sense to use them. Holds the sail panels on better.
