Hey all. I've been using this site now for a couple of weeks and if anyone has seen any of my posts you may have read that I'm getting a 1970 Malibu soon. Well it should have been Saturday but it was raining so we rescheduled for tomorrow night. I'm just wondering what any of you think of the car and what you think it might be worth. I've seen the car and I'm already happy with it. Just curious about others' opinions. Keep in mind that it is not an all original car and it was not represented to be. I wasn't looking for it to be so I'm not worried about being taken on originality or if it has the right fan shroud or anything like that. On to the description.

It's a green with green bench seat interior Malibu that was originally a 307 with a column shift though I'm not sure of the original transmission. It has been changed to a 454 .30 over (told it was a 1976 block), an M20 with hurst shifter on the floor (from 1969), 12 bolt 3.33 (from 1969, might have been a 3.31), F41 suspension, functional cowl induction hood, and power front discs. Interior is all orginal except for carpet (and pristine except for one small one inch slice in the driver's seat). It's had a modern stereo added under the dash and retains all orginal dash components except for a repro tach installed where the clock would have been. It has a repro rear bumper since the previous owner's wife dingned it up a bit. The paint is recent and from what I could tell very nice and complete: door jambs, and all nooks and crannies. It has 58,000 believed original miles on the car. Not sure how many since engine was installed.

The car interested me so much because it was a Malibu that looked like a Malibu that had a lot of SS stuff done to it without making it into a clone. I usually am only interested in SS's but don't like obvious clones and at the same time can't afford a documented SS so this seemed to be a good compromise. That's about all I can think of for now. Ask questions if you want. I'm going to try to attach some pices. Hopefully it works ok.

Very good looking Malibu! I too, like the additions that have been made and that it doesn't look half-assed or anything. Car looks to be pretty clean both inside and out so I imagine the asking price was not very low. Can't really see the engine very well but the inner fenders appear to be fairly new or well cleaned. I like that they didn't just take the easy way out and strip all the A/C components as well.

Nice color too, but I'm biased. Enjoy it as much as you can!

...How much is the asking $?
The asking price was $26k. I got him down a few though.

Sweet car man! It's worth 28 to 35k easy.
I've wanted a 1970 Chevelle since before I could drive and while the Nova I sold will always have a place in my heart I can't help but feel it was a place holder for this car. That being said if someone were to offer me the higher end of your guestimate I'd be tempted.

Yeah, like I said the way it was done, tastefully, is what drew me to it in the first place. I don't want to sound like a Chevelle snob but I normally don't look twice at Malibus. Funny you should mention the AC. He told me it was an original AC car and while the block certainly isn't an LS-6 it's dressed up to look like one. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe LS-6's did not have air as an option. I don't know why but I thinks it's a bit funny that the car has air and an LS-6 air cleaner sticker. Most people will never pick up on that though.:D

I'm not sure why it didn't go sooner either. In person it was impressive. He actually had it in a separate garage, not on the lot with the "regular" cars. It was his car by the way, not just something they acquired to resell. He's had it about 8 years. He got a 70 convertible that's not as nice as this so he's selling to put the money into the convertible. Where abouts are you located by the way? Do you go to any shows around here? I'm in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Thanks all for the comments. I'm supposed to be picking it up tonight. When I get a chance I'll post some more pictures.

I would imagine a green on green Malibu detracts from the ability to sell quickly. Personally I really like the green exterior, the interior is a love it or hate it color. If this had been a red car with black interior my guess is it would have drawn more eyes. Maybe not. Either way, I think you got a good looking car and probably a great buy if the car is solid and you don't have to spend much on it. Its when you gut the car and start changing everything that it gets so expensive and makes no sense to start with a car like that.

Now you just need to convince yourself to take it on a road trip to Tennessee in June...

Well i picked it up last night. One word. Awesome. It really feels like a 41 year old new car and I think I got the best of both worlds; and original looking car (Malibu) with the feel of an SS. Maybe I'm biased now that it's mine but, seriously, this guy did things right.

While we were going over the car at the edge of the lot near a stop light a guy stopped at the light yells out, "How much do you want for that car?" The (previous) owner yells back, "It's sold." - "How much did you sell it for?" - "$3500." - "For real?" - "For real." It was a funny moment.

Then on the drive home a car pulled up next to me at a light and the passenger asks, "You got a stick in that?" "Yup," I said. He turns to the driver and yells back, "I told you!" He complimented the car. I told him I had literally just bought it. He then wished me luck. I thought it was funny that the first compliment came on the drive home from buying it.

I'm used to driving modern 5 speeds (My daily driver is a Subaru WRX). It took me a bit to find all the gears (reverse on the top left is weird to me) but I had the hang of it by the time I got home. If anyone is in the Philadelphia area I intend on bringing it to the Ambler car show on 5/15 (noon to 5PM) so feel free to stop by.

I won't say green on green is my favorite either but my feeling is when you're looking for a finished car in this shape you can't be too choosy. I'm guessing Tennessee in June is this Chevellebration I've been hearing about on here? Unfortunately I won't be able to go there this June but maybe one year I'll make it there.

28 to 35K is way to high IMHO. 15 to 20K is more like it. You can buy documented SS cars in the range of 28-35K. No offense Bisquit but your always high when somebody asks what a car is worth.
I'm really happy with what I got for the money I paid. You can tell that the guy was in it for a lot more than that. He even showed me some receipts. I'll say it a thousand times that I'm not an expert but I'd be willing to say that a documented SS in the 28 - 35K range wouldn't be near the condition that this car is in.

I know on the way home right after I purchased mine there was a kid hanging out of the rear sliding window of a pickup trying to take a picture of the car... Put a big smile on my face! The feeling hasn't stopped yet.

Value is in the eye of the beholder anyway. I don't know if I'll ever own a fully documented SS car. Maybe I don't have the disposable income to justify it but I think I would personally rather take that same money and get a very nice malibu that I can personalize to my tastes.
