Re: 1970 L78
I've seen one other GM of Canada doc where the car was built in KC. AFAIK, Kc only stamped the engine pad, not the oil filter pad in 1970. The particular verbiage of NUMBER PRODUCED FOR SALE IN CANADA was discussed with George Zapora.
EXAMPLE 1: NUMBER PRODUCED FOR SALE IN CANADA is supposed to mean the car was built in Canada and delivered to and sold by a Canadian dealer.
EXAMPLE 2: NUMBER IMPORTED FOR SALE IN CANADA means the car was built outside Canada, such as in Baltimore, Maryland, and imported into Canada for sale by a Canadian dealer.
EXAMPLES 3 & 4: NUMBER PRODUCED FOR U.S. SALE IN CANADA and NUMBER EXPORTED FOR SALE IN THE U.S. means that car was built in Canada but exported to the U.S. for sale by a U.S. dealer.
Now, George did note that all these documents created are one-off, done at the time of the request and formats (wording) isn't consistent so I can sort of understand why wording, and maybe even meaning implied, is different from time to time. They aren't computer generated with specific formats where the data are simply filled in by a computer generated search function. But, being build outside of Canada and IMPORTED TO Canada for sale, shouldn't it have the same verbiage as example #2 above? The document is dated 1997 so I suppose it could be more of old vs. new wording.
I find it odd too that another GM of Canada doc I have (albeit a Z15 454 but STILL a 13637 Malibu) says NUMBER IMPORTED FOR SALE IN CANADA (SAME MODEL NO. ONLY) 231. Since the car in question was obviously built in KC, it would have had to have been IMPORTED FOR SALE and the same 231 number (remember, same model no. only - options not withstanding) should apply. Where would the 10,176 number come from? Certainly not 10,176 L78s :noway: George says of the 231 number, "But due to production constraints some Chevelles/Malibus/whatever could be sent from the U.S. to Canada if we were running short of a low volume option or at build out time to fill orders, so not all of those imported cars are necessarily LS6's. "
George also stated, "Unfortunately for cars imported into Canada from the U.S. we have no option breakdowns before 1972 model year, and they are limited at best for 1972." Whether that means specific options are not known, or options are known but just not how many of any particular option, wasn't made clear.
