hi all,
after pulling the gas tank off of my car i noticed it has 2 lines coming off and then another opening that looks capped off. i only have one 3/8ths fuel line going up to the fuel pump. does this mean i don't have the right tank in the car? the car is a SS, 325 horsepower/4speed.
thanks,
glenn

Glenn, I believe the 68-72 coupe, convertible tanks are all interchangeable/identical. I don't know if the 68 supersports had return lines, but if not, you probably just have a later style 69 model year 3/8's with 1/4 inch return line sender unit. No harm no foul, but if you want to correct it, the single lines are available reproduced for around 40-50 bucks. hope this helps, Jason.

The 68 Tank would have 3 lines on it. The one off the top of your tank (on the sending unit assy) is where your fuel line would hook up. The 2 lines towards passenger side forward corner would be for the fuel vent. it was a little plastic deal that had a piece of charcoal or foam inside of it. I think ground up sells a re-pop of the piece. here is a pic of it (courtesy of Ground Up):

If you look on the underside of body about where the lines come out of the tank there should be a little bracket that was welded to the body to retain the above piece. I believe the pic above shows the piece upside down.

You should have one 3/8" line coming out of the top of the tank at the sending unit. This is the supply line to the fuel pump In the rt front corner of the tank there are 2 fittings, a 1/2" and a 1/4". These are the vent fittings that go to the little piece that Jeff shows above. This is where the gas smell and leaks come from on these cars. See this thread-- http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106519&highlight=gas+tank

thanks for the info guys. my tank's vent was capped off with a piece of rubber and a hose clamp, so i haven't had leaking problems. if it runs like this, should i leave it so i don't have leaks? i drove it very little before i've started my resto, but it seemed to do fine being capped off. i guess the gas cap provided enough venting?
