You couldn't get the TH400 behind the 396/375 (or any other solid-lifter big block) until the 1969 models. There was an exception; Dickie Harrel got a COPO order through in '68 for 50 Nova SS396 with the 396/375 & TH400.
The funny thing is that Pontiac did offer the TH400 on most early Ram-Air V8s. It took Chevy a few years to get going on it though.

The '68 SS396 should have a short water pump. Remember that Chevy sold a lot of crate engines over the years. A cam & head swap would've been a good weekend swap somewhere in the past and it may be the case with the car in question.

To the best of my knowledge the only two solid lifter engines Chevy ever offered air conditioning with were the 327/365 Corvette in 64 & 65 only and the 72 only LT1 Corvette. The LT1 was available other years in the Corvette also, just NOT with the A/C option.

As far as the Turbo 400's, a lot of people don't realize it, but the one put behind the Special High Perf big blocks was different from the std. units. It had revised valving that raised the shift points to 6500 when held to the floor in drive and allowed to shift automatically and also a heavy duty torque converter that bolted to the flex plate with 6 bolts instead of three among other differences. If I remember right that transmission code is YC (at least on the Corvette version)
