I just recently got a 67 El camino. On my drive while bringing it home the hi temp light came on. I had a 200 mile trip ahead of me. I turned on the heater and the light went out. I put up with the heat for so long and then turned it off. A little while later the light came back on. Anyway I did make it home OK. After showing my new truck to some friends one said the he thought that it should have a fan shroud. So that is why I am here. The El Camino that I have is a bare bones six cyl 250CI engine. Does anyone know if they came with a shroud? The truck was given to me by an 82 year old cousin that had variuos things done the the truck including installing a short block. I thought that maybe the shroud could have been left off when that happened. Thanks from a new guy.:beers:

Hi
Welcome---can always use more ElCamino owners in here:D

Nice little area you live in.
I used to live in Santa Maria/Orcutt and spent most of my time in the 5-cities area. My aunt has a get-a-way home in Grover City

I don't believe non-A/C, non-A.I.R., non-heavy duty 6-cyl Chevelles had a fan shroud but would have a finger guard. Here are a couple of examples of non-A/C, non- A.I.R., non-heavy duty 6-cyl Chevelles.

Neat trick with using the heater to increase coolant flow - haven't done that in years.

Thanks for all the welcomes. Using the heater just circulates the coolent farther, it is something that I remembered from my hi school autoshop class. I do plan on flushing the system again to make sure that it was done. As far as posting on another forum I haven't quite figured this sight out. I was also looking for a "Parts Wanted" forum because I have a rigfront fender that is banged up. I will try looking around some more though. Thanks for the help.

Hi Dale, Thanks for the pictures. Is the piece by the radiator cap the "finger gaurd"? If it is then that is what is on my engine. So if there is no shroud I just need to dig a little deeper into the cooling system. On the engines pictured, are they supposed to have an air pump on them?

Welcome from another el Camino nut.
I'd pull the radiator and have it cleaned out or rebuilt. Worked wonders on my 1965 Riviera.

Yes, it's a finger guard. Radiators with finger guards did not get shrouds (from the factory) although many people do add them to help cooling. One must remember these cars are 42 years old and driving conditions in the late 60s was not as demanding as it is today...a 2-row non shrouded radiator was probably efficient enough for its use then but certainly not today. There's certainly room to fit a 3- or 4-row radiator and a shrould if you feel the need if retaining originality isn't an issue.

I think that maybe I have found my over heating problem. I had breakfast this morning with a group of car guys and one of them had an auto shop as his business. I was showing him the big six on this rig and was telling him about my over heating problem. One thing that I saw after I got home was a vaccuum line that went from the vaccuum advance to the carb. Well there was a "T" cut into the line with a short peice of hose on it. Well that hose was wide open so there was no vaccuum to the carb. He was saying that that could have been the problem with the over heating. I just never put that together when I put a screw in the line to plug it. I have not had a chance to take it out on the highway to test the fix but it sure makes sense to me. I will report back when I check it out. Thanks again for all the input.
