I picked up what I was told was a 1967 Chevelle AM Radio at the swap meet on Saturday.
I mainly got it to make the car look more period for less $$ than the cheap looking digital 1980s radio in it now.
It came with knobs and faceplate and speaker and looks pretty good, the faceplate/trim is decent enough, but ours is better I think.

Anyway, the knobs appear to be 1966 and the rear/outer knob cannot be touched when the faceplate is on. They are smaller in diameter than the main knobs (power-volume,tuning).

I read you can tell a 66 from a 67 by the shape of the pushbuttons, but can't find definitive info on faceplates and knobs.

Also I hooked it up to my ancient midland 12v bench supply and it powered up and with a hunk of wire in the antenna, it did make noise that gets louder and you could hear people talking, so it is at least functional!

I paid $30 for it all.

So my questions are
1 - 66-67 knob identification
2 - 66-67 faceplates (same or different & how to tell)
3 - what does the rear knob on the left do (tone?) (the rear on the right does nothing I assume)

Plus I will probably re-wire the light up to the dash lights, so it is on at night, not just when radio is on.

'66 knobs are smaller in diameter. '67 are larger--see 1968 radios for similar style.

Faceplates. Someone else can chime in. I seem to recall there was a difference in smooth surface versus "ribbed" design. Could be wrong.

The knob behind the on/off/volume is for adjusting tone. The knob behind the tuning knob is a dummy knob that does nothing.

Thanks! I looked at the radiotech page already, and that is where I noticed the bit abouty the pushbuttons that I did not know. Yeah, I guess the 67 and 68 knobs look similar. As for the faceplate, I was also wondering if there was a difference in how the shafts were recessed. The one plate I have handy has a fair bit of protrusion that totally surrounds the 66 style tone knob.
Also those knobs are seriously heavy, I am used to plastic ones.

Speaking of plastic. Every face plate I have seen is plastic, was the factory one plastic?

Yup, the older knobs were cast, so they are considerably heavier then the later ones.

The face plate is another issue. Years ago someone posted a picture on this site of a steel face plate. It was original as you could see the rust on it. Never heard what was the outcome (whether it was rare, or only correct for certain models or what).

I'm hoping we have some '66 and '67 Stock Chevelle owners chime in with their findings. Most of my knowledge is on the '70 to '72's.

I will be in Vegas in 1 week from tomorrow, for all I remember, it may have a metal one in it. If so, I would assume cast pot metal, not steel.
Anyone want to trade my 66 knobs for 67 knobs?

66 faceplate is smooth matte finish silver. I believe it was electro-deposited on plastic. 67 is a horizontally ribbed design, also electro-deposited on plastic.

There is a metal radio bezel (faceplate as you guys call it) for 1966.
It is identical in appearance to the plastic bezel except is it is chrome plated cast metal. The only way to get the metal bezel was by getting a dealer installed motorola AM radio. I have three of the metal bezels. I am using one in my 66 convertible with a factory AM/FM.

Is there a difference in 66 & 67 in the shaft area of the radio bezel? (I used the right term this time! I just was drawing a blank on it)

OK, I went and looked at it. I believe it is a 1967 Radio and a 1967 Bezel (even though I wouldn't use it, needs a new one) and 1966 knobs that you can see cannot be reached at all, I had to make a tool to gram it from the back to pull it off.
I also took picture of the speaker if anyone can help ID that.
