A friend is thinking of selling his '66 Malibu two door hardtop due to severe health problems. REAL problems. He wants me to give him some idea of what it might be worth. I have never gone over the car with a fine toothed comb but it does present itself well at a cruise night. It was a six cylinder PG car but the owner had a fresh 283 installed when he bought the car about 18 years ago. He had it appraised in 1996 at $25K which might be a little high for today's market. I've been looking at similar cars for sale on the internet and Hagerty's charts and would think about $18K might be a fair number. This is in Ontario Canada which might be a little different from south of the border. Many of what I see small blocks "pushing" 400 hp and big blocks "pushing" 500 hp . As soon as I see that, I pass right on to the next one. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I will be recommending that he get a proper appraisal done anyway but I would like to be at least in the ball park. I may be able to see the car tomorrow afternoon for a closer look and pictures. Thanks.

It might be worth what you are thinking. It really depends on the underlying condition of the car. A More detailed list of options, color, and wheels would go a long way in forming an opinion.

I agree that we need more details, but IMO, for something relatively "stock", but NOT a survivor or original... Original 6 cylinder swapped to "only" a 283 (& 18 years ago), I think that $18k is reaching... I'd assume for $18k its loaded with options (buckets/console, A/C, PW, tilt, dash guages, etc... Still a Powerglide?

But for selling, I'd forgoe the appraisal... JMO, as most appraisals I have seen had little to do with selling prices, usually bloated well above typical values, although there could be a few good appraisers out there...

But for what its worth, I would not even consider a seller-supplied appraisal in my offer.

The guy who appraises our vehicles does two kinds and doesn't charge an arm and a leg for either. One is what it would cost to replace the car in the event of a bad accident. The other is based on the market and recent sales. It gives a person a decent idea of what they might be able to get for their cars. Have prices gone up on down over the last few years? I was just looking at the Hagerty site and, if it is accurate, $12k to $15K would be more in the ball park but I think prices around our area are a little higher.
I did find an old shot on my computer, nothing recent.

Always hard to tell from pics, but it looks like a really nice car. Remember though, an appraisal can hurt you too. What if it "appraises" at $15K and some guy would have offered you $18K? :)

I will tell you what. If that car is as nice as it looks in that one picture, I'd pay $12K-$15K all day long.

Just let the car speak for itself. A real "appraisal" is the average number of what several relatively serious potential buyers land on.

All prices are local. Take a look at the 1967 Chevelle from a CL ad that appeared in the WIW section today, it's about an hour away from me and Tony. I consider that thing to be a pile, yet several other people on this site think its $10,000 asking price to be reasonable.

Given that you are in Canada and the supply of nice cars is probably limited, should have an impact on value. By the way, how easy is it to import a car from the US and how much does it cost? As for the car originally being equipped with a 6 cylinder, I wouldn't think twice about it, not would it factor in to what I was willing to offer.

I hope your friends health gets better and that he can sell he car for a reasonable amount without much hassle.

I understand importing into Canada isn't all that big of a deal.....as long as you jump through all the hoops in the right order. Do it their way and no problem.

One little side note: This car was sold new at Gorries Chevolet in downtown Toronto. The dealership has been gone for many years. There is a window sticker giving the new buyer a lifetime lube for the car. With the six cylinder engine, it may not have been a musclecar but it rubbed shoulders with them. Gorries was into performance like Yenko taking Camaros and doing the Black Panther paint treatment and some got the 427 conversion as well. I would love to get my hands on one of those dealer emblems.
