I have read through countless threads and still have not found a great answer to the question of sheet metal. Every one I talk to and everything that I have read says that aftermarket sheet metal for the 66 can be hit or miss. With the car that I am doing I will for sure be needing fenders, quarters and a floor.

Other guys have asked what is the best brand which is hard to know since most of us will only install sheet metal once on a car.

What I would like to know is what brand you used, where you got it from and were you happy with the fitment and were all the holes in the correct places.

Please only reply with personal experiences.

I can only speak for the fenders. Even if you have to buy fenders with rusted out lowers, you'll be better off having these patched then replacing the whole thing with a repro.

:thumbsup:i have replaced dash, quarter, tail panel, trunk with dropoffs and door skins. all from AMD....very happy. fit was good overall....everything aftermarket takes a little tweaking i have found. holes were close....some needed to be opend a tiny bit. epdm coating is thick and does not scrape off easily. the metal is the correct gauge.

all that being said, i have done a few cars....some easier than others. my 66 was in bad shape and im slowly getting it back. i do this as a hobby, so professionals may have other opinions.

just my opinion. i enjoy working with the guys at AMD.....they are knowlegdable about their products, take time to talk to you, and generally have good in stock ratio.

x2 from what i have heard about fenders. i have not gotten to that point yet. that being said, i have originals that need a lot of work to get right, i purchased aftermarket to save on freight just in case my originals are too far gone. hope to find out soon as to fit, almost time to set body back on frame.

Do a complete pre fit of all your parts to check fit. Do not eyeball it and guess... My 66 panels from Goodmark required a LOT of work, and they still aren't perfect.

Areas to watch IMO include hood crowning match to fenders. Front edge of fender at the headlight eyebrow - making sure the profile and angle matches the hood. mine didn't. Also overall hood LENGTH - mine was too long! Repop Door skin body line dimensions did not match fender body line dimensions. Mine didn't. Fit of lower fender was very poor at the leading edge of the door. Rocker molding covers, but still - looks jethro to me...

Looks like AMD has fenders in their comming soon that are supposed to be really good. Might have to wait and see those when they come out.

You can deal w/ the off shore manufacturers, or get OE sheet metal.
IMO, OE body panels is the way to go. Floor pans from off shore will work and you'll cover them up w/ carpet. So that's OK.
I've bought OE quarters, tail light panels, and molding from Desert Valley Auto, www.dvap.com and you'll get rust free metal from them. The panels may have some dents, but dents are easy to fix. They're in Phoenix. They're not cheep, but you aren't buying rust.
Another source is Sundell Auto Salvage in NC. Never bought from them, but I've heard they have a large supply of salvage muscle cars.

Don't buy the rear deck filler panel from AMD it's junk. Get the made in the U.S.A. one from opgi, it has the correct contours and fits well.
Right now fenders the deck filler and some others from AMD are not part of their "GM Restoration" line which means they will not fit and look as nice.

Re: 66 repop fenders

Read this little thread, to illustrate just ONE minor but miserable example of the hidden surprises that might await you with repop fenders.

The point is, there are more issues with re-pops than just the absolute fit...read this for a taste of one of those hidden issues.

I just spoke with a guy at AMD and he informed me that in 3-4 months they will have 66 fenders in there "GM Restoration" line. Everything I have read is that this line fits really really good with roofs and quarters etc. obviously they wont be perfect but hopefully better than the rest unless I go for original.

I thought I also heard that there was an issue with the contour of the top rear of the doors and the contour of the quarter panels where it meets the top rear of the door. A fellow 66 owner pointed this out to me on his repo doors and you can sure tell if you know to look for this.

x2 for Sundell.....i have bought from them and are great to deal with.....but a bit high on some of the prices. DVAP.....never had any luck. try to talk with them and they seem to think because they were on tv they are stars. being in the dessert, i am sure most parts are rust free....if you can find anyone to take time and talk with you. just my experiences. there is another place in texas, CTC auto ranch....i have not personally dealt with them, but have friends who have...they seemed ok with the experience.

I just stumbled across this web site yesterday in a Hemmings Motor News Magazine.
http://millsupply.com

I dont know anything about their quality and or fit. Considering the angst with the current suppliers, having another source for repair panels has to be a good thing.
