Iam trying to get my front turn signals to work. They are blinking when I hook a tester to the socket, but when I install the 1157 bulb i get nothing. The book at the auto store said it called for an 1157. Any one know whats going on Thanx for any advise.

By "nothing", do you mean they don't light at all or do they just stay on without flashing? First, replace the lamps (1157) with new ones AND replace the flasher unit under the dashboard. Then, try it again. Do the rear directionals work? Make sure that the sockets are grounded properly as well.
