I am in the process of rescuing a 1964 El Camino that sat uncovered without any windows for six years in the last owners driveway. Because the car was originally from Nevada it held up pretty good. It is now running, registered and on the road. I have had the a very difficult time with the windshield wiper system . The guy before me misplaced the entire system so I didn't have any thing or even know what it looked like. I was able to get all the parts and I have it all installed. the problem I'm having is no matter what I do when I turn on the ignition the wiper come on. I have tried switching the connections on the switch side and have been able to get slow speed and fast speed but when I move the switch to off position they still run. I even disconnected them completely at the switch and they still run. the only way I can turn them off is to disconnect them at the wiper motor. All the wiring is stock and uncut. Unless it's the switch I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. I might have to bring this one to a professional it's above my pay grade.

Is this the motor with the big can shaped motor??

This is pretty much the same motor GM was using in the the big cars in 59+
2 spd integral washer

There are a couple of sets of points in those motors that can be touchy.

the new motor in my 59 (well--6 yr old) does not always wish to turn on.
one set of points is flakey

as for not turning off----this is what is supposed to happen
turning the dash switch to "off" cuts the ground path to the motor.

With the motor in any position other than "Park" there is a cam and points keeping the ground path thru the wiper mounting strap.

When the motor gets to the point it is supposed to stop, a set of points open and another set close and then it will start the parking process.

This motor is not a simple back and forth---there is actually a "PARK" position that is lower than the normal path of the wiper blades.

Could be all you have to do is to remove the assembly, and open it up to clean the points and make sure you have a good ground path to the body when you reinstall.

might have a read of this:

This is about the best description on how to test these I have run across.
Besides---that "Willys 36" is a pretty bright guy

Bryan thanks for your reply. The link was very helpful. Can you tell me where the two points are inside the motor and can you describe them. I'm also wondering if somehow I don't have the wiper motor installed correctly or missing a part because it seems to have a ground already to it. When I hook my tester to the positive side of the battery and then touch the wiper motor it grounds and turns on the light. I know the wiper motor has the rubber grommets around the installation screws. Should there be no ground to it at all ? Just the one from the switch. Thanks again for any help.

The motor has to be grounded to the body.
This is so the motor will keep running until it is in the park position---as we NEVER turn them off when they are in the right position.

all connections on the dash switch are just ground connections.

I might have a junk one outside somewhere.
I will have a look tomorrow and see if I can get a picture of it.

With the motor not shutting off, I would venture to "GUESS" that one set of contacts has corroded to the point of bridging the contact gap.

Been a while since I have had one apart----about 10 years----so I have to do some more thinking on it.

If I can find my 59 service manual I can re-educate myself.

This motor is different than most as it is not direct driven.
the motor actually spins a worm that drives a larger gear to drive the wiper transmissions (linkage).
When it is shut off and everything is working correctly, that big gear actually backs up to park the blades.
Really kind of cool to see it all work.
