$29.6M Mercedes F1 Race Car most expensive car sold at auction

Unrestored 1954 W196 Formula 1 racer sold to an unnamed collector for a staggering £19.6 million, or about $29.6 million at current exchange rates, according to Bonhams, the auction house that managed the sale.

Juan Manuel Fangio took it to victory in the 1954 German and Swiss Grands Prix.

This car was rediscovered after being 'lost' for decades.
The details are a little hazy, but the car was apparently owned by a mysterious European who kept it locked away in a warehouse for almost 20 years.

Yeah, these are the ones with the oil cooled brake setup, and those incendiary magnesium chassis/bodywork, etc.

Yeah...that "German engineering"! Hey, lets put oil cooled drum brakes on our 180 mph capable F1 car! Add about fifty-sixty gallons of high octane for spice, then drive the piss out of her so our flammable car will careen out of control, crash and catch on fire - MAGNESIUM fire. p.s. Don't tell the safety crews about the magnesium, so that they will use water to "put out the fire" which will actually make it worse...
