I prefer the weaker hinge springs, I have see a couple of Chevy trucks hoods bend because a little age on the hinges and heavy duty springs, with the leverage at the end of the hood. Something has to give and that something is usually the hood, why take the chance.

Yes. I've pried off my old springs with a BASD (Big @SS ScrewDriver). Easy to do. Close the hinge so that there is minimal tension on the spring. Wrap the majority of it with a heavy towel, leaving one spring end exposed. Insert BASD between spring end coil and hinge hook and lever off.

Reverse is similar. You use the hinge hook as the support for your spring. Using the BASD like a lever, lift/open the spring and carefully slide it home over the BASD end and onto its hinge hook.

I use spikes (nails). To remove, when spring is extended, stick enough nails between the coils to keep spring extended then close hood and spring falls out. To put in new spring put in vice and bend it to spread coils and keep sticking in nails till it is long enough to install, then remove the nails.
