Need to reorganize shop for better use of space/more cars

When I moved into my shop 7 years ago I didnít have as much equipment as I do now so space planning was pretty much not on my radar. I was just happy with all of the space. 25í wide x 60í deep with 10í wide roll-up on one end.
Now with work benches, lift, welders, compressor, etc, I find myself having to be careful when I open my car doors so I donít hit something.
Anyone out there have any thought on equipment spacing, workbench locations, etc?
Also, any reason I couldnít move equipment like drill press, grinder stand, floor standing sander, 20 ton press, sheet metal brake and other stationary equipment up to the mezzanine? The mezzanine has a wood floor.

Ever check out the Garage Journal? You might find an idea or 2 over there.

I WISH I had your problem. I don't even have a garage.

Four post lift would let you stack and store. Move your 2 out closer to the roll up door. One thing I read often on the already mentioned garage journal is to put your shop tools on casters so you get get them out of the way. I don't see a reason you couldn't put some them on the mezzanine either (assuming it has enough floor structure for proper loading), but you might find yourself going up and down a lot depending on how you use your tools.

I would keep the shop tools on the lower level, with the exception of the compressor. I would also move the lift and shift all the work space towards the overhead door/s and move the shop tools and benches towards the back of the shop as a work area.

Make sure you know what load the mezzanine is set up to handle. It's hard to tell from this photo but it doesn't look like it was built to handle much more than light to medium storage.

Re: Need to reorganize shop for better use of space/more cars

I did go to garagejournal.com. Thanks for the tip.
Fixed tools on casters seems like they would move to much when being used. Even with lock up wheels. Right now I have brake drums from big rigs hanging from the bottom of several tools to add mass so they donít move without having to drill into the concrete.
Yeah, Iím not real hot on the idea of tools up on the mezzanine. Itís plenty strong but it is up a flight.
I like the idea of moving all of the fixed tools to the back of the shop. Right now they are along the side and make the space narrower.
I donít really want a 4 post lift. Car storage isnít an issue. Work space is.

Re: Need to reorganize shop for better use of space/more cars

First how high is that shop?

Ever think about building another mezzanine along the other wall?

Things with stands or legs waste space.

Put a shed outside and put your compressor in there to save space, and put your motorcycle in there, spare engines, shelf for transmission etc. Doesnt have to be huge, even wood will work.

Re: Need to reorganize shop for better use of space/more cars

The shop is 20í tall so height is not an issue. 8í6Ē under the mezzanine.
I donít really need more mezzanine space, itís the shop floor thatís getting congested.
I put the compressor under the stairs so that helped. The 2 post hoist is mounted at 30í from the front and the rear which allows me to raise just about anything without hitting the mezzanine. Itís off set to one side with one post 3í from a wall.
These are few things it would be difficult to move.
I have 2-12í and 1-8í workbenches (wood), 1-6í steel workbench, 2-4íx18Ē shelf units, all against walls. These could be moved.
The drill press, band saw, grinder, belt/disc sander, table saw, metal lathe, welder and blast cabinet are all floor standing. Only the welder has wheels. These can all be moved too and are currently located along walls too.
Three rolling tool chest (1- large, 2-small) are also along walls.
Additional floor space is eaten up by the bathroom and a ďLĒ shaped wall I built to obscure the view through the glass man door in the front.
Currently I can get 3 cars straight in and 1 off to the side but it makes working on anything with the doors open tight.
Iíll make a drawing of the current layout and post it.

Not sure you can make this drawing out but this is the current layout. The dotted lines represent the areas covered by the mezzanine and a storage shelf.

Re: Need to reorganize shop for better use of space/more cars

I stand by my original suggestion. Move all the machine tools including the parts washer to the rear under the mezzanine. Move the large work benches out to make some room.
