Garage Door Insulation??

I have a 3 car garage in central Florida and well it's Florida so it's hot. The house is newer construction (2013) so it's rather energy efficient except for the garage. I am thinking of trying to insulate the garage doors to try to cool the garage off a little bit. I was curious if anyone here has done this and what did you use? I was looking at the Dowcorning garage door kit but I'm not sure if it would work on my doors because there are vertical dividers. I have a 16 foot door and one 7-8 foot door.

Re: Garage Door Insulation??

Have had success using expanded rubber foam. Not the hard pink stuff, but the kind used for noise abatement. It's more flexible.

The only reason someone would want insurance is if they want to pay someone elses bills or want someone else to pay their bills.

BIGOT is a word used by people that can't use logical reasoning to prove that you are wrong when you don't agree with them.

Re: Garage Door Insulation??

Insulation might help a little in the Central Florida dead heat, but I HIGHLY recommend one of these

compact, ductless AC systems.

Mr. Slim by Mitsubishi turned my garage into the most comfortable room in the house.

If I'm not mistaken, the insulation is inside the garage doors already.

Are they hot to the touch on the inside with the Sun blazing on them?

They're warm (no direct sun) and sound hollow and thin

Re: Garage Door Insulation??

Styrofoam is your friend on a garage door. It's very efficient and light enough to not cause problems with door springs. My brother used something else on his, and even after adjusting spring tension, the doors have to be wrestled up.

Re: Garage Door Insulation??

I bought panels from Home Depot that slid into the sections of my door. It gets a little hot here in Arizona too, and they help with my heat pump.

Re: Garage Door Insulation??

Home Depot/Lowes sheet Styrofoam is the ticket. I too live in Florida, same doors you have, and cut Styrofoam panels to fit, almost no need for adhesive, but as others have stated, liquid nail and/or spray adhesive. Really makes a noticeable difference.... Wish ya luck and success!

What thickness did you use? might help me keep some heat in the garage in the winter when I want to warm things up to work on.

Re: Garage Door Insulation??

They sell kits to insulate your door

The Owens Corning kit looks like the way to go, twice the R value of 1 inch styrofoam, and the whole kit only weighs 11 pounds.
