70 396/375

So I'm brand new here and not very Techy.
Not sure if I am in the right spot for this post either.
There is a 70 Black Chevelle on ebay by
Corvette Mike of New England.
I do not know how to copy and paste.
Anyways its claimed to be a 396/375HP
AC.car.
I'd the stamp pad is legit what Am I missing to make an offer on this car.
Seems to be advertised price wise correctly.
I would assume the bench seat column shift would hurt the value.
Would like some knowledge to chime in here.
I dont think he is more than 5-6hrs from me and I am willing to drive .
Thanks
Dave

Re: 70 396/375

Ask for documentation because a 70 Chevelle 396/ 375 HP could not be ordered with AC. Solid lifter motors would not have ac.

Re: 70 396/375

If it is an original A/C car it is not an original 375 HP car.

Re: 70 396/375

The Chevelle (see link below) was originally Black with a Black Vinyl top, with a Black Coated Fabric bench seat interior. It appears to have a factory-installed A/C System -- and can NOT be an L-78.

Re: 70 396/375

The ad says it has a 396-375 hp motor that is not matching numbers so that would answer the question about the A/C being in the car because it probably had a 325 or 350 horse motor in it from the factory.

Yes, but in mid-fall Chevrolet released a memo to dealers that GM as refusing any more orders for the L78 Chevelle, in deference to the LS6 engine that was to replace the L78 as the top-of-the-line engine option for SS Chevelles and ElCaminos.

I think they say a 70 L78 is rarer than a 70 LS6.

This is true, Hank. My friend Roger Stanford's parents bought him a new '70 L78 Chevelle back in early 1970. He still has it. A very rare car when compared to other years, particularly 1969, when Chevrolet built over 9,000 L78 Chevelles and El Caminos.

Based on the smallish number of SS396 Chevelles that were built (as compared to the SS454 Chevelles), yes I believe you're correct in that conclusion.

I got called away for supper and one does NOT keep The Wife waiting. What I wanted to say was that someone (either the owner or the seller) is trying to dance around the fact that the car was not an L-78 from the factory. I kinda see that as being less than honest...

Perhaps it's not even a real factory SS396 at that???

"This Chevelle is a rare special high-performance RPO L78 396 car and one of only 2,144 built. The L78 option was discontinued after the first months of the 1970 model year."

Re: 70 396/375

Here are the things that I see need fixing/wrong / reduces the value IMO;
- small 14" Wheels/Tires
- Bench Seat and Column Shift
- No Cowl Induction Hood with Flapper and correct Hookup from Air Cleaner
- Air Cleaner Decal says 425 HP this is False Advertising !!??
- Exhaust under the Engine seems to be Rusted/Cracked
- Trans Pan seems to need Replacing soon

This all says to me that the Price should be Reduced accordingly

Re: 70 396/375

just after we got my camaro, there was a 375hp, 4 speed, original 4.10 changed to a 3.73 gear, bench seat 1970 chevelle up for sale in town, even had a special order small gas tank? tried talking my dad into letting me sell the Camaro and get the chevelle. Dad said no, buddy in school ended up buying the car. Among the cars in high school it was the fastest car in the parking lot. Unfortunately the car made a ticking noise and the owner and another buddy went to test it and proceeded to roll the car over on its lid. No injuries except a totaled chevelle. Motor and trans ended up in a trans am, radiator got stuck in my camaro, dont know who got the rearend, I saw the shell being towed to the junkyard.
