70 Cowl hood air cleaner & parts - are they real?

Hi guys

I just bought a semi-basket case 70 Malibu and it came in pieces and with a boat load of parts, many of them still in the GM boxes, well worn from sitting in attic's and so on. I've attached the pics. Hood, air cleaner, flapper with actuator, Flap door( GM label#3968539), cowl seal(with GM# label 3955231 still in the box). The label on the air cleaner box is almost unreadable but the ship from is the gm service parts operations belleville mi 48111. The part number is written on the box by someone. Can't make out ship to address other than IL. The hood box is missing any part numbers. FYI, these items weren't even factored into the total cost of the car, other than it was a cowl hood that was new in the box.

You guys are the experts, what do you think?

Matt

The Air Cleaner Assembly is for a Manual Shift Transmission. The top of the CI Hood Flapper Door should have a slight curve or bow to it to follow the hood line - the repops are flat. Difficult to tell much from photos...

But it looks like you got a great deal there.

This is the best straight edge that I have. Looks to be bowed correctly as ends are touching and the middle is not? Thanks,Matt

All the parts posted appear to be genuine GM. Not sure about the hood, but it's probably original as well. A picture of the bottom side of the hood would confirm.

That is correct. Looks like original GM to me. Nice score!

Re: 70 Cowl hood air cleaner & parts - are they real?

I will get a pic of the underside of hood tonight. Someone had it stored on end, the box is falling apart, and therefore lips are slightly bent back about 1/8 " on both rear corners.

Only blemish I've seen so far.

Re: 70 Cowl hood air cleaner & parts - are they real?

Okay, here's the final pics. Actually still has the part number sticker attached. I'm thinking to play the lottery more often after this find.

Thanks to everyone, especially Bruce, for your feedback.

Don't know where I go from here, other than to start removing the new right rear quarter that was put over a rusted outer wheel housing and looks like is was welded to the roof with a soldering iron

Have a great week, I know I will!!!

Re: 70 Cowl hood air cleaner & parts - are they real?

I don't know what you paid for everything, and I don't care to know, but if all that came with it, it appears you hit paydirt!
There is NO ONE on this forum that is a bigger fan of the Cowl Induction system than me.
Our 70 conv is a Malibu, and I've done lots of upgrades including a COMPLETE CI hood system. It works just as it would if it came from the assembly plant that way.

CI hoods only came on BBs. I have a strong SB400 in our 70. MANY folks said the CI hood would not work with a SB---------------well they don't say anything now!
It will be good to see your car on the road someday!!!!!

SCORE! That's an OEM cowl induction hood. Do you have a time machine to go back and order factory parts?

You could probably sell the original parts for enough money to get your project well under way. Heck crazy guy pay hundreds? For a NOS wingnut, imagine what they would pay for your stash! Jim

I don't understand it?????????????????
Why sell it for money???????????????
Why not build the car WITH the parts on it and have a cool car with a TRUE Cowl Induction hood?
Replacing a flat hood with a Cowl Inductrion changes the entire personality of a 70-72 Chevelle!

For example, here is a comparison of our 70 the day I bought it (with flat hood) and today.

Re: 70 Cowl hood air cleaner & parts - are they real?

I know, even though it's only been one day it has crossed my mind since the car is a Malibu, not an SS. I have a bare block 1990 Mark IV 454 4 bolt main to build or a 65 327 bored 30 over that already has the rotating assembly. The parts might be better off in the hands of a NOS person(nut?), because I also need a tranny and driveshaft just for starters...then upgrade the 10 bolt....front disc brakes....and on and on
