Need advice on purchase

Hi all, I am new here but I’m the hunt for a Chevelle. I think I found the one but want some feedback. It is a 71 Malibu from the original owner. They passed away and the family is selling. It went through an older restoration in 1994 and untouched since. At that time it sounds like it had new paint, vinyl top, trunk pan and one 1/4 panel replaced. The engine was rebuilt at that time as well. Car has 125,000 miles but 25,000 on rebuild. Believed to be numbers matching. No rust interior is original. Asking price was 15k which already seemed good comparing to the few others around that are available. I have the seller down to 13,500 which is the lowest priced Chevelle I have found in this good of condition. I am 2 hours from seller and been out of town so I have not had a chance to see in person yet.

Re: Need advice on purchase

25 year old paint wont be hiding any bad things. so if it passes the knocking test on the lower half of the car and no other rot anywhere else and you like that color combo I think its fine

Long term plan would be to remove top, trim, and do a new paint color. New tires and probably wheels right away. Thanks for the input. Price seem on point or fair? How do you determine potential value of these cars. Most of them I see all done up are selling north of 30k.

Based on the photos and your description, I think the price seems okay. The car would look 10x better with a set of 15” rally wheels and decent sized rubber under it. If you spent a few weekends cleaning and waxing the paint and detailing under the hood, it would look much better.

Yeah I think the tiny wheels would have to go right away. That alone may be enough after a good clean up. Painting may be able to be put off several years. Paint is not cracking, bubbling, and has been in a garaged and covered. I am not specially looking for a 71. I would be happy with anything 68-72.

Re: Need advice on purchase

The price is about right as long as there is no previous shoddy body work. You wonít be able to determine that until you see the car in person. Itís may be nice, but itís pretty non-descent, it would be hard to see a car in this configuration sell for anywhere close to $30,000, unless it was from a dealer and they helped with financing. Once you start removing vinyl tops and start doing a repaint, you are potentially heading down a rabbit hole. Make sure you do a very thorough inspection.

Good luck with your decisions.

If you do decide to remove the vinyl top and trim, remove the trim carefully. The trim for vinyl topped chevelles are not reproduces as far as I'm aware, and there is one guy on these forums that has a WTB add in the classifieds looking for that trim for a while now. So you can resell that trim pretty quick.

Re: Need advice on purchase

Numbers matching in a Malibu adds roughly 0 dollars to the value. It's nice to know a car hasn't been fiddled with too much but that's about it.

My Malibu was numbers matching. I sold the Powerglide for $50 and I will give the 307 to anybody that will back up to my garage and take it. The 10 bolt is holding my Camino up at the moment or I'd load it up with the engine.

Thanks for your guys input. Any thoughts on this one? It is closer and just popped up. All original with all original metal. Paint is starting to show its age. Single owner.

Man, look at those door gaps. Just goes to show how the factory assembled things. I left my 69 camaro gaps as-is but on the 68 chevelle I'm working on I'm going to perfect all the gaps even though not "factory correct".

A flipper selling it, thatís not bad by itself. He bought it, but didnít put it in his name, thus it only has one owner. It may be nice, but since the ad is somewhat deceptive, extreme care is needed when inspecting the car. It also demonstrates that there are better deals out there.

Then heíll have no problem putting you in touch with his father in law.

A few years ago, someone knocked on my parents door and bought her 24,000 mile 1984 Honda Accord. A few weeks later I saw it listed on eBay, the seller said he was selling it for his grandmother that could no longer drive. Itís a common ploy, it puts potential buyers at ease, it allows the flipper to skip registering the car in their name and from answering many of the typical question potential buyer ask. Sometimes, itís true, more often itís a lie.

I follow a couple of flippers on eBay, they all run a variation of this scam.
