Re: My 72 SS optioned convertible

As you already know, you darn could't duplicate that car for $50,000.

But insurance companies know the market. $50,000 might be about right.

Thanks for the responses so far... Some options/mods I forgot to mention. Cowl induction hood, sport mirrors, factory SS wheels with the back widened 1.25” for proper fit of 275 BF T/As , front seat shoulder belts.

Any other thoughts on "agreed insurance value"?

I would compare the rate increase for $60,000 over $50,000 and see if it makes sense.

To replace you'd start with a clapped out car and consider how much it would cost to restore to the level similar as your car.

You'll probably come up with a number north of $50.000.

Very nice car by the way. SS emblems would bump the value.

Re: My 72 SS optioned convertible

Agreed upon replacement cost is not the same as fair market value.

But if you're asking how much your very nice car is truly worth, I think the answer is 25-30K, depending on location.

If you want to insure it for 50-60K b/c that's what you'd like to get reimbursed if something happens to the car, that's totally up to you.....but you have to factor in how much the extra insurance costs.

If you're overpaying for insurance by $1,000 per year and you own the car for 20 years and never file a claim, you just wasted $20K in insurance premiums. Would that be worth it?

If the car is as nice as it looks, I think you are underestimating. Seems like even rough / poorly restored Convertibles bring $25k in todays market if they are running and driving. Having a top that goes down adds a lot of value.

I agree on the under estimated value of 25-30k. Unrestored cars are bringing 15-20k. This is a fully restored well optioned car with 28 miles on the odometer.

My current insurance with Grundy MPV for 50k agreed value is $186 per year

Re: My 72 SS optioned convertible

An 'SS' grill would help...as well the SS 454 emblem on front quarter panels...
One thing that has brought out comments on mine is my NK4 steering wheel...

I had an NK4 wheel, but it was in bad shape so I replaced it with the comfort grip.

Funny how adding SS badges result in the perception that the car is worth more? Can’t do it. It’s not an SS.

Just make sure you have an Agreed Value policy which is not the same as Stated Value. If in doubt read your declarations page. Stated Value insurance (most standard auto insurances) will NOT increase the payout above Replacement Value.

There are some states where you cannot get Agreed Value Coverage. Read your policy. I know of one classic car insurance company which is popular for Agreed Value coverage, that doesnít sell that kind of policy in all states. Iím not going to say which one because I want people to do their own homework.

People donít like to have to think in high resolution. Jordan Peterson. Thatís why we are forced in to so many binary choices.

Thanks Alan, it is Agreed Value with Grundy MPV. I can’t stress enough this type of insurance with everyone on this site. Book value just doesn’t cut it with our cars.

I actually had an 04 GTO totaled a few years and received my agreed value check from American Collectors Ins in 2 wks. Book Total value at the time was $13,700, but I received the Agreed Value of $20,800.
