Sell it? I'd build it. You can't buy those kind of memories.

👍👍👍 agreed - even if you just get it all together and leave it for another member of the family to restore or finish off..

Re: Inherited L78 396

This is one of many blocks from 1966 model year Fremont cars that have serious VIN stamp errors. This is at least the 5th that I have seen with a 5 for the year (which should be a 6), and one of at least 20 I have seen with the missing 1 in the VIN sequence number.

Given the casting #'s and other info, and the stamps, I have no doubt that that engine was born in a 1966 Fremont Chevelle SS (or Elcamino) with partial VIN 6Z154826 (or something close to that, since there could be other stamping errors too, like transposed numbers, or using a 2 as a 5, or a 5 as a 2, all of which I have also seen multiple times on Fremont stamps).

** Just saw your later post that it was an Elcamino. Very cool!!

And the June 22 (1966) assembly date for a 66 L78 engine would dictate a 961 block, not the beefier 962 block that was used for 66 L78's assembled before some time around mid May of 1966. So that part matches up too.

I ran searches on NMVTIS for all 4 possible VIN combinations, but no hits. If the car were still out there the engine would be worth a bundle, if not, it depends on condition more than on the stamped numbers.

As to the 67 car, not enough pics yet to speculate on value. But the one thing that is sure is that the body broadcast date on the trim tag (11E) is too early for it to have been a factory 67 L78 Chevelle. Could have been a 325 horse or 350 horse 396.

Good luck with your efforts to sell!
