1970 Chevelle SS maybe

I bought a 1970 Chevelle represented as an SS and only have the Vin, is there a way, without ripping up the carpet, i an tell if it is a true SS? Almost everything that has or would have had a code has been upgraded. I know that the vin will probably not help due to it changing from a production SS to a option in 1970 but included it anyway.

I have searched for documentation but have been told by several sites that nothing is available due to a fire pre 1977.

If you know a way or a site i can pay for more info on my car it would be greatly appreciated.

Vin: 136370L6156470

Thanks,

Bill

According to the vin it's Van Nuys built car. Drop the fuel tank. More than likely a build sheet glued to the top.

Re: 1970 Chevelle SS maybe

For 1970 Chevelle the only verification of being an SS is a numbers matching big block engine, a Protect plate or a build sheet.
If you just want to search your cars history and as long as it is not an Atlanta built 70 you can contact NCRS. For a fee they will send you a shipping data report which will tell you the exact date of manufacture and the original dealer that the car was shipped to. In most cases that dealer was the one that sold the car new.

It depends on what labor rates are in your area. Where I live, itís well over $100/hr. Figure you will get charged at least a couple of hours.

Well I am not suprise the dealer is out of business. I would imagine the vast majority of dealers.from 1970.are out of business. But that gives you a starting point. If you want to find out more about your car I'd take.that information found and run with it.
It may take leg work, persistence and luck but maybe you can find the original owner. Or you could start with person that you purchased the car from and go backwards.
I started with the 4th owner of my 69 and went backwards. Made it all the way to the original owner and got stories from all. I also found a newspaper from the local newspaper in the town that my original dealer was located in from Sept 10th 1969 that featured MY 69 being sold as a new car. Never know unless you try.

You know dropping your tank is not that difficult. You don't have to take it all the way down, just far enough to either get your hand up there or look up there with a mirror and flashlight. Just remember the less gasoline in the tank the better.

That production date must be 12/15/69, not 2/15/69.

Re: 1970 Chevelle SS maybe

Even if you track down the original owner, if he/she doesn't have the original paperwork on the car (or knows where the born with motor is) your still out of luck. A story from the "original owner" doesn't provide the proof you need to state your car is an SS from the factory. Your best bet is to hunt for the build sheet. Assuming you still have the original tank ... run most of the fuel out of it, loosen the 2 bracket bolts holding the tank in place down to where you can get a light/mirror to see if a Build Sheet is there -- pretty quick and easy. I found mine in my backseat (easy to pull) but mine is a Baltimore Built car.

Some cars the build sheet is long gone or never placed in the car since it was supposed to be trashed, it is what it is at that point ... just enjoy the car.

Re: 1970 Chevelle SS maybe

If the tank has never been dropped there is a real good chance some of the build sheet is still there. Good luck.
The build date puts it in the ball park for a LS-6 car.
AC or non AC?
What engine is in it now?

Re: 1970 Chevelle SS maybe

Not a LS-6 for sure.
No paper work and no owner confirmation, can't prove what it was born as.
Paper work can be faked and word of mouth don't mean much. Original owner could be long gone.
"Correct" original papers and matching stories are a plus.
Drive train numbers and SS tell tale signs are a good indicator but not absolute.
Still could find what it was on the gas tank.
