R-12 refrigerant

Anyone know if R-12 refrig. is worth anything these days? guy I used to work for has 2 50lb. tanks unopened and 1 tank about half full, I mentioned it might be worth something to someone restoring a car to original specs, any thoughts?

Re: R-12 refrigerant

Prices have definitely come down. The demand isn't what it used to be. If you have an EPA card you can buy it at stores.

What stores stock R12 now days?

I paid $500.00 for the last drum I bought but that was years ago, right before it went sky high.
It might still be worth a lot to older vehicle owners.
If I didn't already have enough to last me the rest of my life I would be interested.

If he sells it to someone that is not certified, tell him do not give a receipt.

Crazy law;
I'm type l, type ll, and type lll certified BUT not automotive certified so I can buy hundreds of Lbs but I couldn't buy one pound cans at the auto parts store.

Re: R-12 refrigerant

Dean I see what you mean about EPA cert, I have a universal card for anything refrig. related but I didn't even think about that for selling it since I'm not a dist. tia, lic. a/c company in tampa is selling equipment, refrigerant and installation tools to anyone in the general public, don't know how they're getting by doing that, think I'm going to try ebay and adv. to epa card holders only so I don't loose my card
also I haven't seen it sold in years but they do sell a replacement but not exactly the same as R-12, funny how epa has to replace things from great working to works good enough but that's another thread

Re: R-12 refrigerant

The trouble with the R12 replacements that I've tried is you can't top them off, if there is a small leak the system has to be evacuated and re-charged.
Some of the others are flammable.

Re: R-12 refrigerant

Thanks Al, I haven't messed with R-12 in years (even when I worked for other companies) bar owners used to drive me crazy with calls between midnight and closing about beer coolers down and didn't want to put the beer on ice, and butcher shop 911's so I quit refrigeration calls, don't miss it 1 bit, cute bartenders stepping on me was fun though
also guy said he'd split whatever $ I could get so that got me motivated to sell it

The EPA 608 for small appliance and 609 for automotive certification are easy open book tests. Pay your money, take the test online. It's basic, covers theory and proper handling and EPA regulations.

I don't know the procedure for selling refrigerant. Here's some....https://refrigeranthq.com/be-careful...gerant-online/

Yeah, I think they are kind of a joke now, compared to back when we had to go to class for a couple of hours an evening for a week and takes tests.

Re: R-12 refrigerant

We had testing from a company that came to my work place in the early 90's and IIRC the boss paid for everyone or was deducted from pay? but "universal" was the best option test at the time, I've never worked with ammonia but I guess it covers it, and again IIRC it was a 2 hour class

Re: R-12 refrigerant

Dean I'll have to look in my van but I think I'm paying $55-$60 for a 16 oz. can of R-11 for flushing lines to retrofit from R-22 to R-410a, it's liquid though in a can that pours into an oil type injector but also comes compressed, maybe gas?, I'll post a pic and if it's the same stuff I may be interested in what you have if you want to sell it?
