71 Chevelle vert. at auction

Seems ok but VIN doesn't decode correctly, unless I'm missing something.

136371K178325

1 Chevrolet
36 Malibu and Concours station wagon, 8-cylinder
37 2-door sport coupe. This should be 67 for a 2-door convertible
1 1971 model year
K Kansas, Missouri plant
178325 unique sequence number.

Something is wrong. The picture is a convertible, description is for sport sedan. Listed VIN is for a sport coupe.

Someone is selling a tagged car. I wouldn't rule it out but it would be very doubtful to be a factory mistake.

Someone should investigate the engine pad numbers and the hidden firewall vins and the ghost will be revealed. its also illegal to auction a car with a vin discrepancy

Could be a typo in the listing.

Not quite since the auction states it has a hardtop vin number on it so someone did their homework and auction houses always verify vin numbers correctly.

It would also be extremely rare that a vin typo would coincidentally land on an actual hardtop number

Re: 71 Chevelle vert. at auction

It would seem like a lot of trouble, but maybe someone boxed the frame and chopped the top and made a convertible out of a coupe. Sounds crazy to me, but there are a lot of crazy people out there.

The only difference between a hardtop vin and a convert vin is the 4th digit. 3 is coupe, 6 is convert. Not everyone out there is tagging cars.

This makes sense. It's up to $13,000 now with 2 days left.

Yeah you're right...So now what is your logical explanation for this car being legit if it has a hardtop tag on it?

Re: 71 Chevelle vert. at auction

And how many pictures of the actual vin tag have you seen? There are none on the auction site. Someone typed in it in wrong on the description. Unless there is a picture that isn't being shown now. I find a typo to be a much more logical explanation than an auction house selling as car that CLEARLY has been retagged when it is a violation of federal law and would be seized if you tried to register it in states that do a vin check because the vin tag has been tampered with.

Re: 71 Chevelle vert. at auction

The most logical guess would be a simple typo but the ad does state "1971 Chevrolet Chevelle 2 door sedan. Vin"
