Just picked up a 1969 El Camino SS396. Needs some work, but runs. A/c, auto, ps, pb, pow, bucket seats.

Welcome Bob, to Team Chevelle.....

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

Sounds like you have a great project on your hands, it's going to be fun. I bought my 68 SS elky thirty years ago and I'm still sinking money into it and having fun. Attached is a photo of my 68 and my good friends 69.

Re: First El Camino

The 69 SS396 was my first also! Mine has a low compression 454 in it though but I'm real happy with it!!
I found the suspension needs the most attention. I recommend starting off with the Lee 14:1 steering box. Have them build you the 800 Series with a 30 pound valve... Then align the front end to these specs,
-Drivers side, 2 degrees positive caster, .5 negative camber, 1/32" toe in.
-Passenger side, 2.5 degrees positive caster, .5 Negative camber. 1/32" toe in.

These two changes should make a big difference!
