New (to me) 72 El Camino Project

Sold my 67 Chevelle a couple weeks ago so I looked around and found what I hope is a nice little 72 El Camino body. The nose has been swapped (doesn't look damaged underneath so it may have been removed to go onto someone's Chevelle) and no motor & trans, but other than that it's a really nice little car. I have had 8 Chevelle's over the years and no El Camino's so it's high time I did something about that. I had already purchased a 2002 LS-1 with a T56 6 speed transmission. It was slated to go into a 63 GMC pickup build I have started, but once I found this El Camino I kinda shifted gears (pardon the pun) and will now put this package together to make a Pro-Touring, Autocrossing, Daily Driver so I can have fun while I take my time on the 63 build.
Anyhow, only rust I have found is in the back panel below the rear glass. Might have a bit or two more but it was a Tucson AZ car it's whole life before it was brought up here to Phoenix.
Only have a couple pics but here is what I have.

Re: New (to me) 72 El Camino Project

71/72 Elcamino fenders will not work on a 71/72 Chevelle. The Elcamino has different body lines than the Chevelle has. The fender extentions are also different from Chevelle. The hood is interchangeable though. Nice project.

Re: New (to me) 72 El Camino Project

Thanks for the info. Like I said in original posting, I have had a bunch of Chevelle's but this is my first El Camino. Looking forward to a cool daily driver with an LS motor and a 6 speed.

Yeah, they all start with a chunk of iron and a vision. I have now got the motor/trans in and all the rot (all I know of now) out. Time to start moving forward. Soon as I get the heater core and fan blower swapped out tomorrow.

Was yours an A/C car ? Just wondering how bad the heater core will be on mine . I think I may just bypass mine again for now.

Re: New (to me) 72 El Camino Project

Yes mine is an AC car which I will be hooking up immediately. I have the front clip off right now so it's never gonna be easier for me. Gonna pull the dash pad, dash, and heater core tomorrow. Want to put in a new heater core and fan blower motor before I start putting in the new gauges. Then I will start putting it back together. Hate when I have to backtrack later.
Even though this will be kinda down and dirty daily driver I want heat and AC upon start up.

Re: New (to me) 72 El Camino Project

Been a busy last 2.5 months. Finished up the welding after cutting out all the rot. Replaced one front fender and a door skin on the drivers side. It had been hit hard enough on that side to bend the door hinge. Took a lot of work to finally get the doors and fenders to line up pretty close then finessed them from there.
Gaps looked great when I blew it back apart for paint. In the middle of epoxy, polyester, polyester right now trying to get it straight. Hopefully I will have it in color by the 4th of July.
