Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

Here is another question I can throw out there to others.

What ratio rear end should I go with?

Going with a T56 with the .62 (correction .63) 6th gear.

Should have somewhere very close to a 26" tire.295/35/18 or 315/30/18

Was leaning towards the 3.89 ratio but could be talked into the 3.73 or others if people have valid reasoning behind them.

We're really happy with the 3.73 in our 66 but with our .50 T56 sometimes on the highway it would be nice to have a 3.89 or 4.10 so we could cruise in sixth without setting land speed records. As far as autocrossing goes, it seems like there are more courses than not where I am right at the rev limiter and if I went to the 3.89 I would have to shift or bump up the rev limit... ;-)

I have a pretty similar setup with a T56 Magnum with a .63 6th and nearly 28" tire (335/30/20). I did quite a bit of modeling and landed on 3.89 ratio for the rear end. I haven't had it on the street yet, but when I ran the calculations with Hurst Drivelines and Strange Engineering they all agreed with the selection.

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

2126 rpm @ 70 mph w/3.73 and 26" tires
2217 rpm @ 70 mph w/3.89 and 26" tires

1974 rpm @ 70 mph w/3.73 and 28" tires
2059 rpm @ 70 mph w/3.89 and 28" tires

1687 rpm @ 70 mph w/.50 6th 3.73 and 26" tires
1567 rpm @ 70 mph w/.50 6th 3.73 and 28" tires

So is there a big difference between 21xx or 22xx when cruising the highway?

Also Tom- Do you know what first gear is in your trans? Looks like 2.66 in the one I am specing out.

That would put me at 40 mph @ 5349 rpm in 1st w/3.89 rear.

2.66 for my first gear also. My engine likes a bit more RPMs than it used too.

I should also give a shameless plug out to an old high school buddy (graduating class of 19) who has been keeping me sane when I don't think I can do something. He made it into hotrod mag this month.

They do call for the LS3 to be making its peak HP at 6300. That would put me at ~50mph. I am sure yours is north of both of those numbers

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

By going with 3.89's and a 26" tire am I going to make 1st gear completely useless? I want to be able to do a nice smokey burnout when I want, but also don't want to waste first gear.

Would 3.55's be too much of a drop? Most people stick to 3.73s?

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

Or am I over analyzing this and it will be fine either way. Guess it is only a few hundred to swap out to a different one if I need/want to.

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

When I was building my car a friend talked me into a 4.56 gear. His logic seemed sound, when in sixth with a .50 overdrive it will be like having a Muncie with 2.28 rear gear. What I didn't think about was having to shift out of first before I made it through an intersection.

Tom- exactly what I am trying to stay away from. Don't want too much gear for 1st or for 6th, but that is 6th with a .63

But like I said, maybe I am putting too much thought into it. Just change it if it isn't right when I finish the car in a billion years.

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

Had a chance to cut out the frame rail for the driver side tonight. Still need a couple finishing welds on the passenger side and some grinding work, but I "think" it came out okay! It is asking a lot of my little welder.

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

Ran out of welding gas when I was putting on the C-channel for the driver side. Will have to get some more this week sometime. You go through a lot of gas when doing that much welding.

Reached out to Tony to see if we can finalize the brakes and rear end to get that started to be built. Guess I need to figure out brake lines and fuel lines next. Front suspension can go on once I finish sand blasting the old area from under the old front suspension, then paint it up and put the new stuff on.

Re: 65 SS Chitvelle - My PT attempt

I will pose another question to the people who are reading this thread.

When cutting out the tunnel for the t56 are people mostly building/fabing their own or are they going with a trans hump like you get when you get a full kit from one of the sponsers?
