69 Chevelle - Need 2” Cowl Hood

Realizing I need a 2” cowl hood for my new EFI build and maximizing air flow. Yes I already have a drop base cleaner and it still hits on the stock SS hood.

So, I want the lowest cowl, which I believe is 2”. Who makes the best looking and fitting one? Or are they all the same? I am going to go with hinge style.

There are at least two steel Cowl-Induction Hoods. Auto Metal Direct markets a CI Hood manufactured by "TriPlus" in the Republic of China (i.e. Taiwan). The AMD/TriPlus hood's dome starts a little bit more to the rear than the competition's hood, and IHMO looks better. Note that the rear air induction opening is a group of pierced holes. The underhood frame is also a different design than the competition's. Also note that Summit Racing sells this AMD/TriPlus hood under the AMD Brand Name and also under the "Key Parts" Brand Name. This AMD/KeyParts CI Hood appears to be the same as the Dynacorn C I hood you mentioned in your post. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/a...model/chevelle

The second CI Hood is imported by Goodmark. The dome on this CI Hood begins well before the AMD/TriPlus CI Hood and does not appeal to me. The rear induction opening is covered by an expanded metal screen which also does not appeal to me. Again, the underhood frame is of a different design (a concern only if you're trying to buy the correct underhood insulation). https://www.summitracing.com/parts/g...model/chevelle

The third CI hood is manufactured by Sherman Parts. I haven't done any research into this steel hood due to its price. At almost 450 bucks it's priced outside my comfort zone. I assume this CI Hood is American Made and thus, may well be the best quality of the three, but it's expensive. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/s...model/chevelle

Another option you may want to consider is a fiberglass CI Hood simply due to the general lack of a underhood structure near the Air Cleaner. I don't care for 'glass hoods, but it's your call: get what you need. Unfortunately, the 2 inch CI hoods, in 'glass, are also expensive. https://www.andysautosport.com/produ...e__fceh-6.html

Re: 69 Chevelle - Need 2” Cowl Hood

Wow, thank you!

It appears that the AMD has mixed reviews. Some are great, some are poor. I do like where the cowl starts later as well. Although I don’t see TOO MUCH difference between the first link (AMD) and the 2nd one (Goodmark).

Re: 69 Chevelle - Need 2” Cowl Hood

The other thing is, is it completely necessary to install a cowl induction system with the hood? Or can it just be the regular base, filter, and closed top?

I've been running my Goodmark cowl hood with a regular air cleaner for 10 years. Building a cowl induction system had been on my to do list since then, just further down the list. Most people probably don't bother to make a true cowl induction system, just a taller hood for engine clearance.

Re: 69 Chevelle - Need 2” Cowl Hood

Thanks!!!

Got my new AMD hood on. Just have to make some adjustments on the hood front closing hinge. The front center part is higher then the front corners...

Give it a try, but just remember there is a real possibility that if you don't seal off the INduction system it will act like an OUTduction system (think Chimney) and may channel any engine smells directly into your fresh air cowl and then into your interior via the AstroVents.

So, what’s the proper way to do that? What would the end result look like?

You can either spend big bucks for all the dodads that make up the Cowl Induction System (Air Cleaner, etc.) or simply block off the intake source at the rear of the CI Hood.

Re: 69 Chevelle - Need 2” Cowl Hood

I got a 496 and need all the air I can get. Not sure if a camaro/70 Chevelle type cowl induction setup will be enough air...
