Block Plug - What Is It For?

ZZ427/480

Wondering what this small plug is for. It's leaking very slightly. I tried tightening it a little, but maybe should go a little more. I assume I'll have to drain the radiator some to remove it if I want to put some pipe sealer on it. Thanks for any help.

Coolant. At least it appears to be coming from there.

Re: Block Plug - What Is It For?

I think it's migrating there. There's not water in that part of the block. I think that plug leads to the gallery above the cam.

Re: Block Plug - What Is It For?

Thanks guys, very helpful. I always seem to find good answers here. I looked again this morning and there was a small amount, but not near the plug. I think it's coming from the heater hose above it; the original-style clamps look good, but they don't seem to seal well enough. I've already replaced several because of the same reason, including radiator hoses (which should have been a clue in the first place). I've snugged it up until I replace it. There's a bit of staining where the brass angle fitting screws in, but it's completely dry. I found some wetness under the hose end/clamp when I pressed a paper towel against it; plus the couple droplets on the head.

Re: Block Plug - What Is It For?

The ZZ427 engine is built with the 19170538 block. It's described here:

"Auxiliary oil pressure line added to front of block"

Re: Block Plug - What Is It For?

Thanks, Keith. Yeah, I think it's that clamp. I dabbed a paper towel under it and it was a little wet. I'm going to put a better clamp on it.

Re: Block Plug - What Is It For?

I just checked after snugging the clamp up yesterday and it's dry, so maybe the clamp gets a reprieve for now.
