1965 Grill

How can you tell a factory grill to an aftermarket grill?
Is there a GM part number on the factory grill?
Thanks!

Re: 1965 Grill

I bought this quite a few years ago. NOS in the GM packaging. I don't see any numbers on the stamping however. Bought it for my El Camino "restify" which not going to happen. Years before that I had bought a repro from Classic Industries (if I recall, it was around 30 years ago). Terrible. Sent it back. All kinds of tool marks where clamps were for the stamping process. The original is still on the EC. First ding, I was behind a truck-load of onions on 99 somewhere around Modesto, on the way to start USAF navigator school up at Mather AFB (RIP). Slow motion...two onions bouncing along toward me. Boing! one of them missed, the other was a direct hit in the grille part.

Re: 1965 Grill

That sucks! So the original is still on the El Camino? Your not putting the NOS one on?

I have two grills. One that was on my car, maybe repro.....don't know........another one I have I was told it is NOS. Just trying to find out how to tell a real GM from repro.

Here are a couple of pictures I took this morning. I'm going to sell the EC as a roller when I get my act together to post on "what's it worth" forum. I have extra parts...grille, trim, hood, rt front fender, etc. plus books, manuals etc.

Re: 1965 Grill

When you get ready to sell things pm me. Depending on what all you have, I might be interested in certain things. I'm only a couple hours from you.

Re: 1965 Grill

Todd i would think you could tell by the difference in Weigh / Thickness of material

I have 3 Grills for my 67
# 1 is the one on the car, which is a Malibu Grill
# 2 another one that is a old Original one
# 3 a Repo SS one I bought

The #s 1 & 2 seem thicker than the the # 3

and # 3 is much lighter & thinner than the # 2

JJim maybe someone on here can tell you which one is or is not a Original

I am thinking the one on the Right is a Repo based on this

I believe both of the OP's pictures are the same grill. Left is the front side and right is the rear.

65 Chevelle grill part # 3875756

I bought a new grill from a Chevrolet dealer 30 or 35 years ago. Still have it in the box. I was planning ahead.

I tried to buy another one but all of them had significant manufacturing defects. I don't know if they were after market but they were in Delco boxes.

I don't think any reproductions were available that long ago so what you have pretty much has to be a GM piece.

That said, there were definitely early (better) stampings of the grill and later (not as good) stampings of the grill. The later stampings were sometimes wavy and the details lines around the emblem hole were much less distinct. The die was probably pretty worn out by then.
